SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners were dealt an unexpected blow to the roster ahead of an eventual 3-1 win against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park.

The Mariners entered the game with a thin bench due to a series of lingering injuries. First baseman Josh Naylor was out with a sore wrist and outfielder Luke Raley was out due to back tightness.

Outfielder Randy Arozarena was dealing with a hamstring strain entering Tuesday. It was originally thought that he, like Naylor, would be day-to-day and that he could potentially be available off the bench.

Arozarena had an MRI on his hamstring before the game, which revealed mild inflammation. He was placed on the 10-day injured list as a result.

With Naylor and Raley available in emergency situations only and Arozarena on the IL, Seattle's bench had one healthy bat on it Tuesday: backup catcher Mitch Garver.

The Mariners made an emergency move that day and selected the contract of outfielder Curtis Washington Jr. from the High-A Everett AquaSox.

Washington's call-up was in large part due to his ability to arrive at T-Mobile Park on short notice. Everett was scheduled to play at its home stadium of Everett Memorial Stadium in Everett, Wash. The Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers and Double-A Arkansas Travelers were playing far enough away from Seattle that a player would be unable to arrive at T-Mobile Park in time for the game.

The Mariners made their more permanent move six hours ahead of their game against the Orioles on Wednesday and recalled infielder/outfielder Connor Joe from the Rainiers. The M's optioned Washington back to the AquaSox in a corresponding move.

Joe was scratched from Tacoma's lineup in a game against the Salt Lake City Bees on Tuesday but was unable to make the trip to the Pacific Northwest in time for the game.

Washington's option had a post-game designation for Tuesday.

This will mark Joe's second stint with Seattle. He was with the team from April 8-May 22.

In 18 games with the Mariners, Joe slashed .182/.308/.333 with a .641 OPS and hit two doubles and a home run with three RBIs.

Seattle originally signed Joe to a minor league contract Feb. 13 to provide depth to the team at first base and the outfield.

If either Naylor or Raley can't play Wednesday, Joe will likely find himself in either the outfield or first base.

The Mariners will look to clinch the series win against Baltimore at 6:40 p.m. PT on Wednesday.
