SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners are set to face a blitz of left-handed pitching in a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox, beginning at 7:10 p.m. PT on Friday at T-Mobile Park.

The Mariners will face left-handed starting pitchers in all three games, beginning with Ranger Suarez on Friday.

In anticipation of this situation, Seattle made a move to give them better matchups against Boston's southpaws.

The Mariners selected the contract of utility player and right-handed hitter Weston Wilson from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers on Friday and designated utility player Miles Mastrobuoni for assignment in a corresponding move.

Wilson has a career .351 on-base percentage against left-handed pitching in his career. Mastrobuoni was out of minor league assignments, leading to him getting DFA'd.

Wilson is also a utility player in the vein of Mastrobuoni. The former of the two has played every single position in the field in his four-season major league career.

That versatility is something Seattle has valued this season and in year's past. This homestand alone, Mastrobuoni played first base and left field due to injuries to first baseman Josh Naylor and left fielder Randy Arozarena.

"Always difficult to lose a player who's part of the family, as we talk about," Mariners manager Dan Wilson said in a pregame interview Friday. "What (Mastrobuoni) did here, particularly here in the last week, was outstanding. Filled a lot of holes and played in a lot of different spots for us. We were pretty banged up and can't thank him enough for his effort here and what he did and what he brought. ... A difficult day for sure with (Mastrobuoni) exiting."

Wilson will bat ninth and play third base in Friday's game against the Red Sox. Starting third baseman J.P. Crawford will be getting a rest day.

Wilson, who was originally selected in the 17th round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of Clemson by the Milwaukee Brewers, has played 21 games with the Baltimore Orioles this season. He's slashed .231/.348/.333 with a .681 OPS and has hit a double and a home run with three RBIs.

"(Wilson's) gonna get a chance," Wilson said. "Getting right in the lineup tonight, getting a chance to play. (Third baseman J.P. Crawford getting a day). ... Traditionally, (Wilson) has swung the bat well against lefties and obviously we're gonna get a chance to see a few lefties in this series. It should work out well."

-- Center fielder Julio Rodriguez is back in the lineup batting third and playing center field after missing Thursday's game against the Orioles and exiting Wednesday's game due to hamstring spasms.

"Getting yesterday (off) was helpful," Wilson said. "Getting here today, I think he felt pretty good about where he's at. So a chance to get back in there. ... Obviously excited to get Julio back in center field and back in the lineup."

-- Outfielder Luke Raley was out of the lineup for the fourth-straight game Friday. He missed the series against Baltimore due to back tightness and flu-like symptoms. He could be available off the bench Friday, per Wilson.
