The current skipper of the Cleveland Guardians could be an option after all.
According to a recent report from Jim Bowden of 'The Athletic,' the Seattle Mariners are hoping to have their next manager hired by the end of the month, giving them 10 days from the time this article is being written.
I'll be honest: At the beginning of the process, I was hoping the Mariners could trade for Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt, but as the playoffs went on and Vogt's team clinched a spot in the American League Championship Series, I gave up on that idea.
However, maybe we shouldn't be giving up on it just yet. Speaking on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland on Tuesday, Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com said he wouldn't rule out the idea of Vogt going to Seattle.
He made clear to say that this wasn't a report, it was his own speculation, but from his own observation, he thinks it kills Vogt to be away from his family, who will still lives in Washington.
Vogt's wife is from Washington, his family lives there, and Vogt does have organizational familiarity with the Mariners after serving as the team's bullpen and quality control coach in 2023.
The Stephen Vogt file
Still just 41 years old, Vogt was a two-time All-Star as a player. He spent time with the Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks and Atlanta Braves, hitting .239 lifetime with 82 home runs. He made the All-Star team in 2015 and 2016.
When his playing days were done, he jumped into coaching, again, serving as the bullpen coach and quality control coach for the Mariners in 2023. He surprisingly got the Guardians managerial job in 2024, and he's won back-to-back American League Manager of the Year Awards. He's been to the playoffs in all three seasons.
Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt before game six of the ALCS for the 2026 MLB Playoffs at Tropicana Field. Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn ImagesHe's gone 265-220 in three regular seasons. He's taken the Guardians to the ALCS in two of those three years. They were beaten by the New York Yankees in 2024 and the Rays this season.
They lost to the Detroit Tigers in the wild card round of the 2025 playoffs. The Mariners obviously beat the Tigers in the ALDS that year to advance to the ALCS.
How would the whole thing work?
Vogt is under contract with the Guardians, so the Mariners would have to trade for him. Manager trades are rare, but they do happen. The M's once traded Lou Piniella to the Rays for outfielder Randy Wynn.
So, it can be done.
Prior to Castrovince's speculation, we spoke with ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney about the idea of trading for Vogt as well.
