The Seattle Mariners have had an unfortunate string of injured of varying severity and concern over the past several days.

Top prospect and rookie infielder Colt Emerson was out for his second-straight game against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday due to back tightness. Starting shortstop J.P. Crawford landed on the 10-day injured list due to a right-hand contusion Monday.

The Mariners suffered another injury ahead of game two of their four-game set against the Orioles on Tuesday.

Seattle placed right-handed reliever Cooper Criswell on the 15-day injured list due to a right shoulder strain and recalled right-handed pitcher Nick Davila in a corresponding move.

Losing Criswell for an extended period of time is more significant a loss than it looks on paper for Seattle.

Criswell has been the Mariners' go-to innings-eater in low leverage situations but has also been tasked with guiding the team through high-leverage situations when the team has had days with a thin bullpen.

The 29-year-old has done well in that role and has posted a 3.52 ERA this season with 23 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched across 26 appearances. He has one save in two opportunities and three holds.

In Criswell's absence, Davila will be back up for his second major league stint with Seattle and second major league stint overall.

Davila's contract was selected May 2. He was optioned back down to Triple-A on May 26. The 27-year-old didn't allow a run (earned or unearned) across seven appearances and struck out four hitters in 7.1 innings pitched.

Davila will likely find himself in more high leverage situations in this stretch compared to the first due to the team's current starting rotation situation.

Seattle is opting for a six-man rotation going forward, at least for the immediate future, leaving the team one spot down in the bullpen.

With the six-man rotation, Criswell's role on the team was more critical to provide rest for the high-leverage arms in the bullpen.

Now with him on the shelf, Davila and fellow right-handed reliever Alex Hoppe will likely be tasked with taking a majority of the low-leverage innings. Both pitchers might find themselves in those exact situations and the M's are currently in the middle of a stretch of 10 consecutive games without a day off. That stretch will conclude June 14.
