The Seattle Mariners have been one of the best teams when it comes to talent selected in the MLB Draft over the last several seasons.
In 2023, Seattle used three top-40 picks to select outfielders Tai Peete, Jonny Farmelo and shortstop Colt Emerson.
Farmelo and Emerson are both top 100 prospects and Emerson is the organization's top minor leaguer and is projected to make his major league debut in 2026.
In 2024, the Mariners used their first and second-round picks to draft switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje and right-handed pitcher Ryan Sloan. Both hurlers are also top 100 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline.
In 2025, after landing the No. 3 pick in the draft despite some of the lowest odds in the previous winter's lottery, Seattle selected left-handed pitcher Kade Anderson, yet another top 100 prospect.
Seattle recently got another decent draft pick in the Competitive Balance Round B section of the 2026 draft.
Since 2017, the MLB has used the Competitive Balance Round "A" and "B", which takes place in between Rounds 1 and 2 and 2 and 3 of the MLB Draft, respectively, as a way to give lower-market teams a competitive equalizer with upper-market clubs.
The order of the Competitive Balance Rounds uses a formula combining revenue, winning percentage and market score to award picks.
According to an article written by Joe Trezza of MLB.com, 15 teams were awarded Competitive Balance round picks. Seattle was awarded the second-overall pick in the Competitive Balance Round B behind the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Mariners will also have the No. 24 pick in the first round, if the New York Mets don't receive a lottery pick.
Seattle has been successful in using its competitive balance picks in the past. Peete was picked with a Competitive Balance Round A pick in '23 and used another CB-A pick on catcher Luke Stevenson, another prospect with top 100 potential, in 2025.
Unlike other draft picks, the CB selections can be traded. The Mariners have prided themselves on being a draft-and-develop organization over the last several years. But with a healthy foundation of players signed through the decade, a starting rotation backed up by top 100 prospects and several top 100 prospects projected to make their debuts as soon as next season, Seattle could be incentivized to move the CB-B selection in a potential trade.
