The Mariners' top hitting prospect will be used in ways that can "impact the game," rather than a set role.

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners were able to avoid a disastrous and potentially season-ending sweep at the hands of the Athletics on Sunday and prevailed 2-0.

The win was marked with a career-best outing from starting pitcher Bryan Woo, who threw an eight-inning shutout. It was the first time in the 2025 All-Star's career he pitched through the eighth inning.

Sunday also marked the major league debut of the organization's top hitting prospect, Michael Arroyo (No. 45 MLB Pipeline top 100). Arroyo batted eighth in the lineup and started at second base in his debut while the usual starter at the position, Cole Young, received some rest. Arroyo didn't reach base in his debut. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his debut.

Arroyo's best tool has also been his bat-to-ball skills. He's been arguably the best contact hitter in Seattle's farm system for three years now. However, his place on the defense is has been an ever-developing process.

Arroyo played the majority of his time in the Mariners' minor league system at second base, but has played the majority of this season in left field. His ability in the plate makes him a legitimate candidate to receive days as a designated hitter, as well.

Arroyo wasn't in the Mariners' lineup for the first of a three-game series against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park. And it seems like the team will continue to be versatile with how it uses the 21-year-old going forward.

"I think each night's gonna present a different situation," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said in a pregame interview Tuesday. "And we'll look at it day-to-day. (Arroyo) is a right-handed bat that has proven in the minor leagues to be very effective. Righties, lefties, doesn't matter. Obviously we'll look to get him in there in opportunities where he could affect the game. Whether that's a start, whether that's coming off the bench, every day will be a little bit different."

In 114 games with the Double-A Arkansas Travelers and Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, Arroyo slashed .283/.359/.471 with an .830 OPS and hit 23 doubles, five triples and 18 home runs with 81 RBIs  and stole 17 bases in 21 opportunities.

First pitch for Tuesday's game against the Rangers will be at 6:40 p.m. PT. The Mariners will enter the game six games out of first place in the American League West and 5.5 games out of the final wild card spot in the American League.
