Jaxon Smith-Njigba is on a historic pace at the wide receiver position and he's rivaling what Raleigh did throughout the season for the Mariners.

I'll admit it: This piece is not an original idea. I was moved by something that longtime Seattle sports radio personality Dave Grosby implied on social media on Sunday, and he was right.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is putting together a season reminiscent of the one we just saw from Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh.

And the two of them, along with Julio Rodriguez, make up the current "Holy Trinity" of Seattle Sports, at least from my vantage point.

JSN vs. Big Dumper, records and accomplishments

Raleigh just had the best season ever by a catcher, hitting 60 home runs and driving in 125 runs. The 60 home runs are the most ever for a catcher in a season, the most ever for a switch-hitter and the most ever by a Mariners player.

He started the All-Star Game, won the Home Run Derby and finished second in the American League MVP voting.

As for JSN? Through just 11 games, he already has an astounding 80 catches for 1,313 yards and eight touchdowns. He leads the NFL in catches, yards and yards per game. He has already set the single-season Seahawks receiving yards record and is on pace to have the most receiving yards ever in a single-season. That record is currently held by Calvin Johnson (1,964 in 2012).

There are still six games to go. Like the Mariners, the Seahawks are on track for a playoff berth. They are 8-3 and in second place in the NFC West.

    The Groz's real point

Grosby's real point was not just that the two players are having historic campaigns, but that the greatness is becoming so commonplace, that teammates can't help but come to expect it.

The quotes from this Gregg Bell article about JSN were pretty standard in the Mariners clubhouse when you would talk to teammates about Raleigh.

"It's just second nature now. We know it's going to happen."

    "He's inevitable."

    "Nobody's doing what he's doing."

    The MVP debate

Like Raleigh, JSN will have a case for the NFL MVP award at the end of the season, especially if he reaches the 2,000-yard mark, which no receiver has ever done. However, he'll have an uphill climb for that award, as no non-quarterback has won since 2012 (Adrian Peterson). Before that? It was 2006.

    Up next

For JSN and the Seahawks, it's a Sunday date at home against the Minnesota Vikings. For Raleigh and the Mariners? It's more of the offseason, with the winter meetings coming up Dec. 7-10.
