The Seattle Seahawks beat the Los Angeles Rams 31-27 on Sunday night to advance to the Super Bowl for the fourth time in franchise history. The Seahawks are 1-2 in their previous three Super Bowl appearances and they'll take on the New England Patriots on Feb. 8. The Patriots defeated the Denver Broncos 10-7 in the AFC Championship game on Sunday afternoon. The Patriots also famously beat the Seahawks in the 2014 (2015 calendar year) Super Bowl - the last time Seattle made it.
This continues a banner year for Seattle sports, as the Seattle Mariners also advanced to the American League Championship Series, falling just one win shy of advancing to the World Series.
One of the stars of the Seahawks win on Sunday was wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who had four catches, 36 yards and a critical touchdown. However, he made noise before the game as well, walking into the stadium in a sick Ken Griffey Jr. throwback M's jersey.
I don't want to speculate too much, but that appears to be a spring training/batting practice top. Either way, any time you can pay homage to Griffey, you do it.
A Yakima, Wash. native, Kupp played his college football for Eastern Washington. A longtime standpoint out of the Rams, he returned home this season to play with the Seahawks, becoming an integral part of the locker room.
A nine-year veteran, Kupp is a Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion (2021). He led the league in receiving yards, touchdowns, first downs and receptions in that campaign. This season, he had 47 catches, 593 yards and two touchdowns.
One of the best players in baseball history, Griffey was the face of baseball in the 1990s. A 22-year veteran, including 13 with the Mariners, he was a 13-time All-Star, a 10-time Gold Glover, a seven-time Silver Slugger, a three-time Home Run Derby champion and an MVP (1997). He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016, earning 99.3 percent of the vote.
He had two seasons of 50 home runs or more, including 56 in 1997. That was the M's franchise record for a single season until Cal Raleigh broke it with his 60 home run barrage in 2025.
The Mariners are already coming to agreements with top international talent in the Class of 2027, inking two players worth more than $3.5 million.
