The Seattle Mariners youngster hit his first career home run inside his new home ballpark on Tuesday night.
Seattle Mariners youngster Lazaro Montes made team history - and T-Mobile Park history - with a massive home run on Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Montes uncorked a 474-foot home run to deep right field that made it a 4-3 ballgame.
The ball actually went onto the concourse in right-center field. According to Mariners TV, it was the longest home run hit at T-Mobile Park in the Statcast Era, which dates back to 2015.
Furthermore, it was the second-longest home run hit by any Mariner, period, in that time frame. It trails only a wind-aided ball that Jarred Kelenic hit at Wrigley Field. As noted by Francys Romero, it ties Fernando Tatis Jr. for the longest home run of the 2026 season as a whole.
Montes, who is a Top-100 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, made his major league debut against the Boston Red Sox one week ago. This was his second home run since getting called up. He hit 38 homers in the minor leagues this season. One of the most prodigious power hitters in pro ball this season, he also features a good amount of swing-and-miss in his game. That was evident in his first at-bat where he struck out.
We discussed earlier on Tuesday if Montes should be playing every single day down the stretch, especially as the Mariners fall further out of the race.
The same thing can be asked about fellow top prospect Michael Arroyo, who just made his debut on Sunday.
Up next
The Mariners and Rangers will play Game 2 of a three-game series on Wednesday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. PT. The game has been moved up to accommodate the start of the NFL season, which features the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots at 5:20 p.m. PT. The Seahawks are the reigning Super Bowl champions and will unveil their championship banner.
This game features a Super Bowl rematch, as Seattle defeated New England 29-13 in February.
As I wrote on Tuesday, I'm not particularly thrilled about the whole game-time switch.

The latest edition of the 'Refuse to Lose Territory' podcast is out, talking about the M's rotation woes, if Lazaro Montes and Michael Arroyo should play every day now, and if the M's really have a chance at the playoffs.
