The Seattle Mariners and the rest of the major leagues are in the beginning stages of the 2025-26 offseason, and there's a lot of anticipation on what the club will do to build on its stellar postseason run.
Big moves may be in the Mariners' near-future, but for now, Seattle has been shoring up the front end of the bullpen.
Earlier this week, the Mariners acquired right-handed reliever Cole Wilcox in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Seattle added another right-handed reliever to the 40-man roster Thursday. The Mariners claimed 26-year-old Ryan Loutos off waivers from the Washington Nationals.
Loutos signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an undrafted free agent July 22, 2021. He made his major league debut June 1, 2024. He made three scoreless appearances this season (0.00 ERA) and 2.1 innings but didn't register a strikeout.
Loutos was designated for assignment by the Cardinals on April 28 this year. The Los Angeles Dodgers traded for him in return for cash May 1.
The Dodgers designated Loutos for assignment a month later on June 6. He was claimed by the Washington Nationals four days later on June 10.
Loutos had 12 total outings across his stints with Los Angeles and Washington. He posted a 12.75 ERA with eight strikeouts in 12 innings pitched.
With the move, Seattle has 17 relievers on the 40-man roster: Eduard Bazardo, Matt Brash, Blas Castano, Jhonathan Diaz, Domingo Gonzalez, Emerson Hancock, Jackson Kowar, Casey Legumina, Loutos, Andres Munoz, Gregory Santos, Tayler Saucedo, Gabe Speier, Troy Taylor, Trent Thornton, Carlos Vargas and Wilcox.
The Mariners' bullpen was the position that experienced the most turmoil in 2025 due to injuries to the starting rotation and relievers. Seattle president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto and general manager Justin Hollander have both expressed that a team can never have too much pitching, and it looks like they're making sure the M's have a surplus of arms this winter.
