The Seattle Mariners are currently in the midst of a postseason push that could result in the team accomplishing a feat for the first time in franchise history.
The Mariners are the only team in Major League Baseball that hasn't made a World Series. Entering Tuesday, Seattle had a 1-0 lead over the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series.
While the Mariners are in the middle of their most promising postseason push in over two decades, several promising organization prospects are down in Arizona competing in the Arizona Fall League as members of the Peoria Javelinas.
Top 100 prospect Jonny Farmelo was one of the standout performers from the first week of AFL play, and was named a top performer by MLB Pipeline.
Farmelo hit .250 (3-for-12). His three hits included a double and a triple. He had eight RBIs and stole two bases. His eight RBIs led all AFL players in Week 1. Five of those RBIs came in the Javelinas' 15-1 win against the Salt River Rafters.
Farmelo (No. 75 MLB Pipeline top 100, No. 35 Baseball America top 100) was a part of a stacked 2023 draft class for Seattle that included fellow outfielder Tai Peete and the organization's top prospect (and current member of the postseason taxi squad) Colt Emerson — all of whom were selected in the first round.
Farmelo made his professional debut in 2024 with the Single-A Modesto Nuts, but suffered a torn right ACL June 11, 2024, that kept him out of action until April 29 this year.
When Farmelo made his season debut, it was with the High-A Everett AquaSox. He suffered a stress reaction in his rib that kept him out from May 24-Aug. 8.
For the season, the 21-year-old outfielder scored 18 runs in 29 games and hit six doubles, a triple and six home runs with 16 RBIs. He slashed .230/.318 with a .778 OPS.
Similar to Emerson last year, who dealt with his own string of ailments, the Mariners opted to assign Farmelo the AFL to make up for the at-bats lost during the minor league season.
If the first week of the AFL is any indication, the extra at-bats have been paying off for Farmelo.
