The Chicago Cubs entered this offseason looking to acquire pitching help, in both the starting rotation and the bullpen. The Miami Marlins, after not making any big moves at the trade deadline with their starting pedigree, are now sending the Cubs help in their rotation. Chicago has acquired pitcher Edward Cabrera in a trade with the Marlins in exchange for top outfield prospect Owen Caissie and two hitting prospects, as reported by ESPN.
Miami held on to both Cabrera and Sandy Alcantara through the trade deadline after links to multiple teams, but rumors swirled into the offseason about what that rotation might look like. They’ll hold on to their Cy Young winner in Alcantara while sending off Cabrera following a standout season. Cabrera pitched a 3.53 ERA with 150 strikeouts in 137.2 innings pitched and went 8-7. However, the 27-year-old is plagued by an injury history, and they’ll receive a major prospect in return.
Here is the full story from Marlins Roundtable writer Anthony Aguirre on the major trade that brings Miami a coveted prospect.
The Cubs get a strong righty pitcher to add to their rotation, but they had to part with Caissie to do it – which is a steep price. ESPN rates Caissie as Chicago’s No. 2 prospect and the overall No. 49 prospect in baseball. The Marlins were able to get a considerable return for their pitcher with a storied injury history with additional intriguing prospects.
