The Miami Marlins look to avoid a series sweep against the Philadelphia Phillies, following a 6-4 loss on Tuesday.
Despite leading 3-1 ahead of the bottom of the sixth, a four-run rally flipped the game’s trajectory. Relievers Michael Peterson and Tyler Phillips struggled to contain the Phillies’ offense.
The Marlins are losing grip in the National League standings. With 35 games left in the regular season, opportunities are slipping away.
Probable Pitchers
The Phillies will start Aaron Nola on the mound. He’s produced a 5.33 ERA and a 4-9 record in 130 innings (25 starts). The one-time All-Star relies on six pitches:
- Knuckle Curve (33.1 percent)
- Four Seamer (24.1 percent)
- Sinker (18.6 percent)
- Changeup (16.1 percent)
- Cutter (7.2 percent)
- Slider (0.9 percent)
Nola has an above-average chase rate (65th percentile), whiff rate (69th percentile), and strikeout rate (63rd percentile). He has a 54th percentile walk rate, walking at least two batters in his last four starts.
The 33-year-old has faced the Marlins 27 times throughout his 12-year major league career. Nola spoke with Tyler Boronski about facing the “scrappy” division rival.
“The Marlins have always played us good,” he said. “We’d go [to LoanDepot Park], in the eighth and ninth inning, they’re coming back to tie or win the ball game. It’s always a pretty good battle.”
After maximizing the bullpen on Tuesday, the Marlins start former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara. He’s tied for the most starts (26), leads in innings pitched (170.2) and batters faced (702) among major leaguers. Alcantara has produced a 3.43 ERA and a 13-7 record. He relies on seven pitches:

- Changeup (20.4 percent)
- Four Seamer (19.4 percent)
- Cutter (14.6 percent)

Game Notes
In the lineup, Joe Mack returns from a three-game absence. He was sidelined with a sore right shoulder, but nothing serious or concerning. Mack was breaking out of an offensive slump before being sidelined. Last Saturday, against the Cincinnati Reds, he had three hits in five at-bats, including a solo homer.
Griffine Conine starts at first base (batting fourth), Owen Caissie is the designated hitter (batting sixth), and center fielder Jakob Marsee will leadoff.
The Phillies are rolling with most of the same starting lineup, as it’s been throughout the series. Instead of J.T. Realmuto, Garrett Stubbs will operate behind home plate (batting ninth).
