The Miami Marlins have traded left-handed starter Ryan Weathers to the New York Yankees for four prospects, the Marlins announced Tuesday.
The Marlins are expected to receive outfielders Brendan Jones (No. 15 in New York’s system per MLB.com) and Dillon Lewis (No. 16), and infielders Dylan Jasso (No. 23) and Juan Matheus.
This is the second pitcher in Miami’s projected 2026 starting rotation that the team has traded away this winter.
The first was Edward Cabrera, who was the Marlins' best starter in 2025. In return for Cabrera, the Marlins got three prospects from the Chicago Cubs, featuring Owen Caissie, who was Chicago’s top prospect and now ranks No. 4 in Miami’s system.
The Marlins weren’t going to get that type of return for Weathers, who has battled injuries, has only started 24 games over the past two seasons.
Tuesday's trade makes sense for both teams.
Weathers hasn’t produced much for the Marlins over the past two years.
When he was healthy, he pitched well enough, combining for a 3.74 ERA in 2024-2025.
But much like with Cabrera, there’s a lot of injury risk, and that, plus Miami having two lefty pitching prospects in Thomas White (ranked No. 22 by MLB.com) and Robby Snelling (ranked No. 51) -- both expected to move up in 2026 -- makes moving Weathers a logical choice.
For the Yankees, it makes sense because the team needs quality pitchers.
With Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon both dealing with elbow injuries that will cause them to miss the start of 2026, the Yankees are in need of rotation depth, which is also part of why the team was linked to Cabrera and his fellow Marlins starter, Sandy Alcantra, earlier in the offseason.
It must be said that there’s some irony in a team looking to for a fix for pitching injuries by trading for a player known for being injured.
Still, Weathers is reliable, and if healthy, could help the Yanks in the loaded American League East.
