Getting to Know the Fish: Hicks' Versatility an Asset for Marlins cover image

Liam Hicks brings proven offensive value and positional flexibility, offering the Miami Marlins a valuable asset and potential mentor for the team's emerging talent.

It took Miami Marlins catcher/first baseman Liam Hicks a while to get to the majors.

At 26 years old, Hicks made his MLB debut on Opening Day last March, and he ended up playing in 119 of Miami's 162 games. He ended the season as one of the team's most valuable offensive players, with his 1.3 WAR ranking sixth among Miami position players.

Despite some promise, Hicks isn't projected to be Miami's Opening Day catcher.

But he's capable of playing more than one position, and could be a positive influence on one of Miami's top young players.

Hicks is the latest subject of "Getting to Know the Fish," a Marlins Roundtable series profiling each Miami Marlins player.

Height: 5-foot-9

Last Year: Hicks got off to a solid start, posting a .294/.373/.412 slash line in April. May was even better. Hicks had what ended up being his best month of the season, hitting .313 with an OPS of 1.059. But that would be as good as it got for Hicks in 2025. His OPS continued to dip over the next two months, falling to .750 in June and plummeting to .548 in July. Hicks bounced back a bit in August, getting his OPS back up to .704. But in September, Hicks had his worst month of the year, posting a .163/.305/.225 slash line with a .530 OPS.

Outlook: The Marlins' primary catcher is Agustín Ramirez, who had an up-and-down rookie campaign. Ramirez hit 21 home runs and stole 16 bases, becoming the first rookie catcher in league history to have at least 20 homers and 10 steals.

But Ramirez only slashed .231/.287/.413, had a below-average OPS+ of 92 (100 is the league average) and was worse defensively, throwing out just eight of 91 base stealers.

If Ramirez doesn't improve on some of his offensive metrics and doesn't significantly improve on defense, it could open the door for Hicks to get more playing time.
