Getting to Know the Fish: Thomas White Era Is Near cover image

The Miami Marlins' top pitching prospect, Thomas White, has a blazing fastball and devastating slider. His rapid rise signals a future ace ready to dominate.

The Miami Marlins' farm system is worth getting excited about.

Miami has five prospects ranked in MLB.com's top 65, and four of them are expected to be in the majors at some point in 2026.

Thomas White is at the top of the list.

The 21-year-old is the No. 17 overall prospect in baseball and the No. 1 left-handed pitching prospect.

The Marlins traded two of their starters, Edward Cabrera (Chicago Cubs) and Ryan Weathers (New York Yankees), knowing they had White and fellow lefty Robby Snelling (No. 5 LHP prospect, per MLB.com) waiting in the wings.

White is the latest subject of "Getting to Know the Fish," a Marlins Roundtable series profiling each Miami player.

Height: 6-foot-5

Weight: 240 pounds

Hometown: Rowley, Massachusetts

What makes him a top prospect?: The first thing people look at with any pro baseball player, whether it's in the majors or minors, is production. White has plenty of that to show at the minor-league level. The fact that he started last season in High-A ball and ended the season in AAA shows how good he was.

In nine high-A starts, White went 2-2 with a 2.83 ERA.

In 10 AA starts, he went 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA, and in just two AA starts, he had a 3.86 ERA.

So what does White do well that leads to this success?

Well, for one, he throws the ball hard, with a fastball that touches 99. But White’s best pitch might be the slider, which rates as a 70 out of 80, per MLB.com’s scouting scale.

His K/9 in the minors is 12.9, so, yeah, this guy is a power pitcher, and Marlins fans can’t wait to see him.

Outlook: If White pitches well in AAA to start the season, he’ll be in the majors very soon.

When he does get to the majors, there’s a chance he gets to do what not many rookie pitchers can, which is help the Marlins make it to the playoffs.

With Cabrera and Weathers gone, people have to step up, and White is certainly one of those people.
