The Mets will honor late franchise legend Jerry Koosman with a memorial patch on their home and road uniforms throughout the 2027 season.
The New York Mets will pay tribute to one of the most important pitchers in franchise history throughout the 2027 season.
The team announced Thursday that it will wear a memorial patch honoring Jerry Koosman, the legendary left-hander who helped deliver the Mets' first World Series championship in 1969.
According to MLB.com, the patch will appear on the sleeves of New York's home and road uniforms throughout next season.
The team has not yet revealed the design, saying it will be unveiled at a later date.
Koosman died Sunday at age 83 in Osceola, Wisconsin, following a period of declining health.
As previously reported, Koosman was a central figure on the 1969 Miracle Mets, whose unexpected championship remains one of baseball's most celebrated achievements.
While Tom Seaver was the ace of New York's pitching staff, Koosman delivered two of the most important victories in franchise history.
He won Game 2 of the 1969 World Series against the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles, helping the Mets even the series after losing the opener.
Four days later, Koosman pitched a complete game in the decisive Game 5, securing New York's first championship.
He finished the series with a 2-0 record and a 2.04 ERA over 17 2/3 innings.
Koosman's contributions extended far beyond that championship run.
The two-time All-Star spent 12 seasons with the Mets from 1967 through 1978, compiling 140 victories, the most by a left-handed pitcher in franchise history.
He also ranks second in team history with 346 starts, 108 complete games, 2,544 2/3 innings pitched and 26 shutouts.
His 1,799 strikeouts rank third in franchise history, while his 3.09 ERA ranks sixth.
Koosman was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 1989, and the organization retired his No. 36 in 2021.
He became the third player in franchise history to receive that distinction, joining Seaver and Mike Piazza.
The uniform tribute comes as the Mets prepare for another season while recognizing the individuals who helped establish the organization's championship legacy.
New York's two World Series titles came in 1969 and 1986, with former pitcher Ron Darling remaining connected to the franchise as a longtime television analyst.
For Koosman, whose performance helped transform the Mets from perennial losers into champions, the memorial patch will provide a season-long reminder of his lasting impact.
