The Polar Bear reached a historic milestone in his Queens return, but Coby Mayo’s dramatic inside-the-parker silenced Citi Field as Baltimore edged past New York in extras.
There isn't much to be excited for right now with the New York Mets, but fans flocked to Citi Field to see former Mets star Pete Alonso play with the Baltimore Orioles.
After Alonso went hitless on Monday, he had a home run, which was his 300th of his career. On top of that, the Orioles won the game, 7-5, in 11 innings as Coby Mayo hit the go-ahead home run in the top of the 11th inning.
On Monday, Mets fans gave Alonso a standing ovation, and they even left the stadium early following Alonso's final at-bat in the eighth inning.
On Tuesday, fans got what they paid for. The Mets took a1-0 lead in the first via a Jared Young sacrifice fly, but the Orioles scored two in the second, and the Mets then added a run in each of the second and third innings, including a Carson Benge home run.
The game went scoreless until the top of the ninth when Alonso hit his 300th career home run in a memorable moment at Citi Field.
It not only tied the game, but it gave Alonso a chance to get a curtain call from the fans in Queens as chants of "Fire Stearns" resonated through the ballpark.
Both teams scored a run in the 10th inning, but Coby mayo's three-run home run was the difference maker for the Orioles.
And, it was an inside-the-park home run as AJ Ewing crashed into the center field wall.
Bo Bichette drove in a run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 7-5, but Benge flew out to end the game.
Alonso now joins a list of just three MLB players to hit the 300 home-run mark in the first eight seasons. The other two are Ralph Kiner and Albert Pujols, and mets fans can only imagine what it could've been like if he stayed in Queens.
Alonso also met up with the fans who caught his home run ball after the game, and he gave them some gifts.
The Orioles and Mets will play one final game at Citi Field on Wednesday, and while the Mets are not in the playoff picture, the fans have one more chance to see Pete Alonso at Citi Field again, assuming he is in the lineup.
The Orioles are still alive in the Wild Card race, although they are three games back of the Cleveland Guardians for the final AL spot.
