Ryan Tayman wasn't among the Mets' highest-profile draft picks, but the catcher hit .316 with five home runs in 21 games to earn recognition from MLB Pipeline.
The New York Mets may have found an unexpected standout in the ninth round of this year's MLB Draft.
Catcher Ryan Tayman wasn't among the organization's highest-profile selections, but his impressive professional debut has earned national recognition.
MLB Pipeline named Tayman the Mets' top-performing player from their 2026 draft class, highlighting his production with Single-A St. Lucie.
Tayman batted .316 with five home runs, five doubles and 17 RBIs in just 21 games.
The 21-year-old also posted a .432 on-base percentage, .579 slugging percentage and 1.011 OPS.
He collected 24 hits in 76 at-bats and drew 13 walks, demonstrating an ability to reach base while providing significant power.
His performance was particularly impressive considering that New York selected him with the 270th overall pick in July.
Tayman also made an immediate impression in his professional debut.
The former Cal Poly standout homered in his first professional at-bat and finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs in St. Lucie's 14-6 victory over Dunedin on July 28.
That performance provided an early indication of the offensive ability that had made Tayman one of the Big West Conference's most productive hitters.
Tayman spent his first two college seasons at California before transferring to Cal Poly for his junior year.
The move paid immediate dividends.
After hitting five home runs during his sophomore season at California, Tayman erupted for 18 homers in 2026.
He batted .357 with a .447 on-base percentage, .672 slugging percentage and 57 RBIs.
His performance earned him co-Big West Player of the Year honors, along with Most Outstanding Player recognition at the Los Angeles regional.
Those accomplishments helped establish Tayman as an intriguing draft prospect despite his eventual selection in the ninth round.
In fact, Tayman's debut was already attracting attention before MLB Pipeline's latest recognition.
He was previously identified as having the best professional debut among New York's 2026 selections in Baseball America's evaluation of the Mets' draft class.
However, Tayman remains outside MLB Pipeline's list of the Mets' top 30 prospects.
That could change if he continues producing at the plate.
MLB Pipeline noted that Tayman still needs to develop defensively and improve against offspeed pitches, two areas that could influence his progression through the minor leagues.
Nevertheless, his early offensive success provides an encouraging foundation.
The Mets have also seen several highly regarded prospects emerge as potential major league contributors in 2027, including Jefferson Rojas and Jonathan Santucci.
Tayman is now working to establish himself among the organization's emerging prospects.
And after producing five home runs and a 1.011 OPS in his first 21 professional games, the ninth-round selection has given New York another promising young player to watch in 2027.
