Mired in the NL East basement, MLB insider Jon Heyman thinks the New York Mets might end up selling and doing well at the trade deadline.
The New York Mets continued to be near the bottom of the National League East and they hold one of the worst records in all of baseball.
To be frank, nobody saw this coming, even with Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz leaving in free agency. The Mets still have plenty of talent on their roster, but key injuries to stars such as Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor haven't helped.
Disappointing starts to big names such as Jorge Polanco and Bo Bichette also didn't help, and the Mets are suddenly trying to figure out if they are going to sell or buy at the upcoming MLB trade deadline.
The Mets might be better off moving some pieces for future assets, although David Stearns is always hesitant to throw the season away and is hoping to make the postseason in 2026.
MLB insider Jon Heyman hopped on MLB Network and revealed why the Mets are in a "tough spot" ahead of the August 3 trade deadline.
Heyman began the clip by saying that "right now" the Mets will fight to try and get into the playoff picture, although he continued by saying it is a tough path ahead.
"I think the expectation is that they will end up selling," Heyman said. "If they do [sell], they will do well."
Heyman mentioned pitcher Freddy Peralta at the top of the list, although the Mets just gave up a pair of prospects in the offseason to acquire him in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Peralta was also named the best trade piece for the Mets by ESPN's Jeff Passan, and teams always want to add big-name starting pitching at the deadline. But, Passan also suggested that the Mets wait and see if they can turn things around before making any moves.
Here's the good news: The Mets have time before August 3. Here's the bad news: There hasn't been much hope whatsoever.
Some other candidates Heyman mentioned are all pitchers, with AJ Minter, Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver and even Clay Holmes named by the insider.
Holmes, meanwhile, has been out and it remains to be seen if he returns before the deadline. Even if, it remains skeptical on what type of trade package the Mets would need to part ways with the veteran pitcher.
If the Mets enter July toward the bottom of the NL East, it might be time to accept that moving players for assets is the best decision for this team.
