An inside the park grand slam from James Wood highlights the Washington Nationals win against the New York Mets
After missing multiple opportunities to walk it off in last night's game, the Nationals took it personally after the Mets got 10 runs in extra innings. They ensured that they wouldn’t let that be the case in game two after they defeated the Mets 9-6 Tuesday night.
Two batters in, Mets Bo Bichette hit a two run homerun to get the rain delayed game started. Four straight hits for the Mets to start the game. A sacrifice fly by Marcus Semien brought in yet another runner, Juan Soto, for the Mets to continue their strong offensive first inning.
The Mets would have three runs on four hits to open the first inning.
The Mets would keep tacking on the runs going into the second inning. Once again, it’s Bichette who becomes a problem for the Nationals tonight. He found himself hitting another two-run homer to make it 5-0 Mets.
The Nationals would need to generate some sort of offense if they wanted to see any action and keep themselves in the game before the Mets lead gets out of control.
The bottom of the second inning would be the start of the Nationals strong offensive run.
With bases loaded for the Nationals, James Wood steps up to the plate looking to take care of business. And he did just that. The two outs didn’t phase Wood as he drilled the 85 mph sweeper 379 feet for an inside the park grand slam to the left center field wall.
Before you knew it, the Nationals have cut their deficit and now are only one run shy of tying things up at home. Wood became the third player in franchise history to record an in the park grand slam.
The momentum carried on to the third inning where José Tena was able to tie things up, 5-5. The Nats would continue working the bat throughout the inning.
CJ Abrams earned a walk before Daylen Lile singled to right to put him and Abrams on the corners with no outs. Abrams was able to get the Nationals another run after a passed ball by Luis Torrens gave room for him to come home.
The Nationals kept at it in the third inning after Jorbit Vivas hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring Lile in. It seemed like the Nationals just couldn’t be stopped.
The fourth inning would continue the strong run the Nationals were having after Wood was able to secure third and Tena to second. Eventually, Woods and Tena would both go on to score on yet another Mets error.
The Mets two recorded errors were beneficial for the Nationals as they closed out the inning 9-5. Across the second, third, and fourth inning, the home team was able to respond to the deficit putting up nine unanswered runs.
Soto silenced all the unanswered runs after he homered to center in the seventh. But the Nationals wouldn’t let the Mets get any closer, sealing the Nationals victory.
In his first game with the Nationals this season, Dylan Crews notched a single and finished 1-for-4 in the win.
With the series evened out, the Nationals will see the Mets in game three tomorrow at 6:45 p.m. where they aim to take the lead before the series concludes on Thursday.
