A pair of Washington Nationals were honored after dazzling last week in the minor leagues
All the attention has been centered on the 2026 regular season for the Washington Nationals, yet a pair of minor leaguers were honored on Monday after being named to the Prospect Team of the Week.
Outfielder Yeremy Cabrera and right handed pitcher Miguel Sime Jr. were both honored on Monday as the Nationals are now one of three teams in baseball to be represented in the weekly awards to start the 2026 regular season.
Cabrera was honored after going 9-for-18 at the plate while posting a pair of home runs, helping Fredericksburg win five of their last six games. He also notched a pair of doubles and a triple while amassing four runs batted in and seven runs, riding a ten game hit streak into Monday. Cabrera also leads the Single A Carolina League with a 1.223 OPS while he's notched eight successful steals, including six last week.
Though he has struck out on nearly 30% of his at bats, the 20 year old center fielder is hitting .362 this season with a .500 OBP, .723 slugging and 1.223 OPS in 60 plate appearances this season, adding three home runs and eight RBIs.
Cabrera, ranked the 20th best prospect in the Nationals farm system, was one of five players that the Nationals received in January when the front office pulled the trigger on a trade that sent pitcher MacKenzie Gore to the Texas Rangers.
Sime, meanwhile, did not allow either a hit or earned run in his lone start while tossing nine strikeouts in four innings during his start last week, adding confidence to the 18 year old.
Sime, ranked the 16th best prospect in the Nationals farm system, arrived in DC after being drafted by the Nationals in the fourth round of the 2025 MLB Draft, arriving as one of the top prospects in the country who was initially slated to play at LSU.
Across three games this season, Sime has posted a 3.24 ERA and 1.20 WHIP while amassing 18 strikeouts to just eight walks in 8.1 innings.
The 18 year old first turned heads at the Spring Breakout game when his near 101 mph fastball struck out JJ Wetherholt, one of the top prospects in baseball, on what ended up being the most powerful pitch of the day. His power has been undeniable as the 6-foot-4 right hander was a "source of constant intrigue" during the summer showcase circuit, as MLB.com noted.
