Off the heels of a no-hitter through five innings, the Washington Nationals announced a diagnosis for Jake Irvin along with another roster move
One day after a dazzling performance in a road win against the Atlanta Braves, the Washington Nationals announced another hit to the pitching staff.
Right handed pitcher Jake Irvin will head to the 15 day injured list due to a right shoulder strain, the team announced on Sunday afternoon.
Irvin is coming off his second scoreless outing of the season after not allowing a hit through five innings and 80 pitches, yet he departed the game after feeling tightness on his final pitches of the fifth inning. He came out for a warmup pitch to begin the sixth inning before departing and Brad Lord taking the mound.
Irvin admitted postgame he did not believe it was a serious injury. "Just precautionary. A little bit of tightness," he added postgame.
Brad Lord came in to allow one hit, a leadoff single in the seventh inning, before securing the Nationals' tenth-ever one hit game as Richard Lovelady notched his fourth save of the season.
Irvin owns a 5.23 ERA this season with 58 strikeouts and 2-4 record across 11 starts so far in 2026. His seven strikeouts marked the most since tossing a season-high nine against the Chicago White Sox back on April 25, while already the third game this season with at least seven strikeouts in a start.
With Irvin headed down, PJ Poulin heads back up to the Nationals just days after being sent down to Triple A Rochester to make room for Clayton Beeter.
Poulin last appeared in last Monday's loss while he closed the month of May without allowing an earned run across 6.1 innings as he looks to pick back up where he left off this week.
While manager Blake Butera looks for a speedy recovery off the heels of a strong performance from his starter for the second straight game, the Washington Nationals are set to close out the three game series against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday in the rubber match. Washington will look to secure its sixth road series win of the season and second straight, while of course standing ahead of another opportunity to get back to .500 overall during the regular season.
