Washington Nationals pitcher prospect Jarlin Susana received praise after notching six strikeouts in his latest appearance
The Washington Nationals have watched a handful of prospects stick out through October in the Arizona Fall League, yet Jarlin Susana returned to form in his latest appearance this week.
The 22 year old right hander tossed six strikeouts and allowed three walks and one run in three innings in the Salt River Rafters' 7-5 win over the Scottsdale Scorpions on Wednesday. That includes 13 pitches eclipsing 101 mph, including a max velocity of 102.4 mph, while exiting his latest appearance with a 5.73 ERA.
Susana's run allowed came in the third inning after striking out his first batter faced, then walking the next two before striking out his final batter faced on a seven pitch at bat. Susana was then replaced before the next pitcher gave up a single into right field, breaking the scoring open. Yet the Rafters would take full control of the game after scoring three runs in the fifth inning, then four runs in the sixth inning to command a 7-1 lead.
Following Wednesday's start, Susana now ranks tied with two pitchers for the third-most strikeouts in the Arizona Fall League with 15. Owning a 1-1 record, he is also ranked inside the top 25 pitchers with a 1.36 WHIP along with holding opponents to a .190 batting average.
When Susana takes the mound next remains to be seen with the Rafters on a scheduled off day on both Friday and Sunday with JT Etheridge scheduled for Saturday and games set to resume next week.
Susana's appearance is the latest in a string of encouraging showings from the organization after outfielder Teo Banks blasted a two home run game days after being tabbed a standout from week two of the Arizona Fall League. Catcher Kevin Bazzell, meanwhile, also had an encouraging outing last week that included a home run.
As for Susana, it marks the latest encouraging showing for the Nationals' prospect looking to capitalize on the chance of becoming a starter in 2027. The appearance also led Bazzell to rave about Susana's impact through the minors into the Arizona Fall League with an impressive four seamer and sinker, while the offseason gives the high ceiling prospect a chance to improve his stamina and become more consistent. Susana is coming off a 2026 season where he notched a 6.20 ERA and 1.43 WHIP across eight appearances, tossing 37 strikeouts to just 18 hits allowed.
