Despite all his struggles offensively, infielder Nasim Nuñez set a new franchise record for the Washington Nationals this week
The playoffs may already be long out of the picture, but the Washington Nationals have given some reason to be excited about the performances in the final games of the 2026 regular season.
That was just enough for Nunez, who notched his 49th stolen base this season to secure the franchise record for the most in a regular season. He topped his current teammate's record after CJ Abrams previously recorded 47 stolen bases during the 2023 season.
Nunez entered 2026 with just 17 career stolen bases across 90 games over the last two seasons, marking a notable feat for the struggling infielder.
While his speed has been a clear asset, the accolade comes as Nunez has limped through the 2026 season where he is on track to register career lows in batting average, OBP, slugging and OPS. Nunez is also hitting .111 through the month of September with five strikeouts and three hits across 27 at bats. His hit in Wednesday's win marked his first in four games, in addition to his first run scored in exactly one week. Nunez's lone home run this season was recorded back on July 1 in a blowout win against the Boston Red Sox, yet it is tied for a team low alongside outfielder Andrew Pinckney, who played 17 games after bouncing between Triple A Rochester and the Nationals this season.
Nunez also found himself as the other part in a second half position move after Blake Butera and Paul Toboni revealed he would appear at shortstop at times through the rest of the regular season with CJ Abrams moving to second base. Whether Nunez returns to the Nationals remains to be seen as he's on a one year deal prior to arbitration.
The Nationals are set to kick off the final series of the 2026 regular season at Nationals Park on Friday night when they host the New York Mets. Andrew Alvarez is set to take the mound to open the slate with first pitch set for 6:45 PM. Washington will look to close out the slate on a high note after securing the franchise's best regular season win percentage since 2019.
