Cameron Maybin views the Bronx skipper as the ideal leader for San Diego's star-studded roster, sparking debate over the future of the Friars' dugout under new ownership.
The San Diego Padres made the playoffs despite looking like they would miss out in the middle of July.
Not only did they make the postseason, but they also hosted and won the Wild Card series against the Chicago Cubs.
Last offseason, Mike Shildt decided to step away from managing, and the Padres held a search that included big names, including Albert Pujols and Ruben Niebla, the latter of which stayed on as the team's pitching coach.
In a bit of a surprise, the Padres hired Craig Stammen, the former San Diego reliever who played alongside Fernando Tatis Jr. and others before retiring and moving to a front office role.
While the Stammen hire was a surprise, he did a decent job and led San Diego to a huge streak down the stretch.
With new ownership in town, Stammen's time in San Diego could be limited, although there has been no indication yet that they will bring in a new manager.
In an odd stance, former MLB outfielder Cameron Maybin had an interesting idea. He said Aaron Boone should be the next manager of the Padres.
Maybin's comments came right around the same time that the Yankees announced Boone would return for 2027.
"Unpopular opinion, but I’d LOVE to see Aaron Boone manage the San Diego Padres when his time in New York is done!" Maybin wrote on X.
Maybin played just one season with Boone and the Yankees, which came in 2019, but he sure made it clear how he feels. He called Boone a great leader, and he spoke about the pressure he faces with being the manager for the Yankees, who always have plenty of eyes on them.
Right now, however, the Padres will likely stick with Stammen. After all, despite a rough start, he helped San Diego make the postseason.
Sure, he made some puzzling decisions time and time again, but that is also to be expected for a first-time manager, especially with him having to manage in high-leverage situations and deal with a long list of injuries.
But Cameron Maybin sure had us thinking: How would Aaron Boone do in San Diego?
It's just a talking point right now, especially with the Padres giving Stammen a three-year contract last winter.
Meanwhile, who knows what the new owners decide to do, and questions also are out there regarding the future of GM A.J. Preller.
It's certainly something to think about, and this might be a more realistic scenario in 2028, if Boone leaves New York and if Stammen doesn't get another chance as Padres manager.
