Fresh off a sweep of Chicago, San Diego faces tough bench dilemmas and pitching adjustments as they prepare to battle the top-seeded Brewers for a championship spot.
The San Diego Padres are riding high as one of the hottest teams in baseball, and maybe even the hottest among them all.
San Diego had no issues with a two-game Wild Card series win at Petco Park against the Chicago Cubs, and Craig Stammen's team is hoping to keep things up against the top-seeded Milwaukee Brewers.
San Diego once again has to make some roster decisions, and a big surprise for the Wild Card round was Joe Musgrove landing on it, and he made his first appearance in two years as he closed the door for the Game 1 win.
We took a stab at the roster ahead of the Cubs series, although it's safe to say Musgrove's inclusion was a surprise to many.
So, here we go again with another prediction before the NLDS.
Catchers (3): Freddy Fermin, Luis Campusano, Ethan Salas
Both Campusano and Salas got a start each in the Wild Card round. Fermin didn't have an at-bat, but he was a substitution late in Game 2.
It figures to be the three catchers again, especially in a longer series.
AJ Cassavell of MLB.com said the three complement each other perfectly, and Stammen has raved about all three of them, which could make it hard to part with any of them.
“We could start all three of them at any point,” Stammen said. “We feel really good about our three catchers. I feel like those three are as strong as any group of three in the big leagues, and they'll bring different skill sets to the table.”
Infielders (6): Gavin Sheets, Miguel Andujar, Xander Bogaerts, Jake Cronenworth, Manny Machado, Ty France
There isn't anybody you can take out of this group, and why would you?
Sheets didn't start any of the two games, but his pinch-hit two-run home run showed exactly why the Padres benefit from having him on the roster.
Let't not forget what Sheets did against Milwaukee in May, either.
Outfielders (5): Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill, Dustin Harris, Samad Taylor, Jase Bowen
This is where things get tricky. Jase Bowen is there mainly for late-inning defense. Tatis and Merrill are starting every game, and Taylor and Harris both should get playing time.
Austin Hays is the odd man out, and he went hitless in five at-bats in the Wild Card series.
Frankly, Hays could also be here, and there's a scenario where Bowen is the odd man out, although AJ Cassavell thinks he sticks around due to his defense.
"Jase Bowen is a must-keep, too, given the value of his outfield defense. Reading between the lines, then: Austin Hays, Samad Taylor and Miguel Andujar for two spots," Cassavell wrote.
So, Hays misses the cut.
Starting Pitchers (4): Michael King, Nick Pivetta, Walker Buehler, Robbie Ray
The Padres are going with Robbie Ray for Game 1, and it should be Michael King and Nick Pivetta for the next two games, respectively.
Frankly, I would've started Buehler, but Stammen is the manager, and that's why he gets the big bucks.
The Padres had 15 batters and 11 pitchers for the Wild Card round, but adding an extra pitcher makes sense given the longer series.
Relief Pitchers (8): Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam, Bradgley Rodriguez, Randy Vasquez, Yuki Matsui, Wandy Peralta, Joe Musgrove
This would give San Diego 12 pitchers, which is what Cassavell thinks happens as well.
"So, while it’s Musgrove, Morgan, Peralta and Vásquez vying for the remaining available spots -- there might be three spots to go around this time, rather than two," the Padres' MLB.com beat writer wrote.
The obvious choices are Miller, Morejon, Adam, Rodriguez and Matsui. Vasquez, to me, is a shoe-in due to his flexibility, and he can even start if needed.
David Morgan was on the Wild Card roster, but he didn't appear in either game. Joe Musgrove's appearance was perfectly-timed by Stammen, and to be honest, it all depends on how Musgrove feels.
If he feels fine, you can't leave him off, even if he just throws one inning all series long. Wandy Peralta wasn't on the Wild Card roster, either. However, I believe having an additional left-handed arm - especially with Ray starting Game 1 - is going to be valuable.
