The Philadelphia Phillies have a major problem with Kyle Schwarber.

Earlier on in the 2026 MLB campaign, Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber appeared to be on his way to another spectacular season.

And in a sense, it already has been for the designated hitter.

Schwarber is slashing .241/.362/.522 with 33 home runs and 63 RBI on the year as a whole, and he appears to be well on his way to clobbering 40 homers for the fourth time in five seasons with the Phillies.

The problem? Schwarber has encountered a major power shortage over the last month.

Since July 9, the 33-year-old has homered just twice, with his most recent long ball coming on July 18. He hasn't left the yard since.

So what exactly is going on with Schwarber?

Well, the four-time All-Star has been battling a back injury that kept him out of the lineup for a couple of games in June. It didn't result in an IL stint, but it has certainly resulted in some significant problems for Schwarber at the plate.

After smashing a combined 22 home runs over the first two months of 2026, Schwarber has homered just 11 times total since June. He logged a grand total of three dingers in July, when he managed a .743 OPS. Through five games in August, he doesn't have a hit.

For a Phillies offense that has labored mightily as it is this season, Schwarber's sudden decline could be the absolute death knell.

Yes, Philadelphia did acquire some much-needed help at the trade deadline, acquiring second baseman Luis Arraez in a deal with the San Francisco Giants. Arraez is a three-time batting champion, so he should provide a massive boost.

But how much will the addition of Arraez matter if Schwarber can't get going?

It doesn't seem as if there is a simple solution to Schwarber's health, either. If the Phillies thought a trip to the injured list would help, surely they would have made such a move.

Instead, they are allowing Schwarber to play through his back ailment, and clearly, it is sapping just about all of his strength ... and at the worst possible time.

Philadelphia is still smack dab in the middle of the National League Wild Card race, but it's hard to imagine that the Phils will be able to snatch a playoff spot with Schwarber this compromised heading into the stretch run.

Last year, Schwarber meant everything to Philly's lineup. He bashed 56 home runs, led the majors with 132 RBI and finished second behind Shohei Ohtani in NL MVP voting. That's in spite of Schwarber not even playing the field.

Barring a spectacular turnaround over these last seven weeks, Schwarber won't see such an end result this season.

Clearly, Schwarber is a shell of himself at the moment, and there may not be any answers. That's a scary thought for the Phillies.
