The Phillies had an interesting 2026 season.
The Philadelphia Phillies are getting ready to embark on a crucial offseason, following a strange 2026 season for the team.
After starting the year slowly, the Phillies decided to part ways with manager Rob Thomson, bringing veteran Don Mattingly in to lead the team. Mattingly then helped Philadelphia get to the playoffs, giving the team a real boost.
But a 10-14 record in September almost saw the Phillies miss the playoffs, and the team then lost in the National League Wild-Card Series. Philadelphia couldn't overcome the slump, ending their season early once again.
2026 was a disappointing year all around for the Phillies, with the team having World Series aspirations again. But as the team heads into the offseason, there does seem to be a sense of hope for the future.
In a new post World Series power rankings, MLB analyst Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report ranked every team entering the offseason. For the Phillies, the team came in ranked in a surprising spot, coming in at No. 8 around the league.
Despite the Phillies being eliminated in the playoffs early, there still seems to be a lot of faith in the team going forward. Philadelphia is bringing back Mattingly to manage the team next season, choosing continuity for the organization.
The Phillies don't have a lot of financial flexibility heading into the winter, but the team has never allowed that to hold them back. Philadelphia has taken risks over the years, even when its backfired on them at times.
This team still has the core of Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and others leading the way, giving them a chance to win. But at some point, the Phillies may need to make some changes to the roster after so many failed opportunities to win.
This coming offseason could be that time, but for now, it seems that the Phillies will stay the course, adding to the roster. Philadelphia will have some changes coming, but this group still believes that they can win a title.
It is a veteran core for Philadelphia, and the clock is ticking for them. But heading into the offseason, the Phillies do need to add some new firepower to bring life back to this organization.
Nobody knows how or what that will look like, but the Phillies remain in the hunt as a top team in the NL heading into 2027. But if they aren't careful, Philadelphia could be passed by other younger, hungrier teams next season.
