Pirates Linked to Two-Time All-Star INF This Offseason

The Pirates may be looking at some big moves this offseason.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have some work to do this offseason, bolstering the roster for a potential playoff run in 2027.

The Pirates finished last season with a record of 82-80, showing themselves to be more competitive than most thought they would be. So, as the offseason gets started, the Pirates' front office will need to add to the team for next year.

One name that has been linked with the Pirates is two-time All-Star C.J. Abrams of the Washington Nationals. Abrams was a major trade candidate from the Nationals at the deadline this year, but Washington decided to hold off on moving him.

However, after a breakout year for the infielder, it could be time for the Nationals to pull the trigger. And if they do, the Pirates could be one of the more interesting landing spots for Abrams.

MLB analyst Dayn Perry of CBS Sports mentioned the Pirates as a possible landing spot for Abrams if he is traded. The fit of Abrams in Pittsburgh is there, but whether the front office is willing to make the move is an entirely different story.

Since Abrams has two full years of team control remaining on his contract, it will take a lot for the Nationals to move him. But Washington is looking to rebuild, and Abrams may not be part of the future plans.

The veteran has been very productive at the plate over the last few years, earning his All-Star appearances. Last season, Abrams hit .261 with 33 home runs, 106 RBIs, and 34 stolen bases, while posting an OPS of .833.

Pittsburgh could use production like this in the lineup, giving the team much more pop for the upcoming season. However, the defensive concerns of Abrams could have a team like the Pirates deciding to pass.

Abrams doesn't feel like an everyday shortstop, but if he were to be open to playing second base, the fit could make more sense for Pittsburgh. But the Pirates will have to lose Brandon Lowe in free agency for this to completely work.

Lowe is a free agent this offseason, and it remains to be seen if he will end up returning to the Pirates after a breakout year. But if Lowe were to walk in free agency, the Pirates should look to replace him with Abrams, putting the All-Star at second base.

Abrams could be a nice consolation prize for the Pirates, and he's younger than Lowe as well.
