The Pirates' front office has some work to do this offseason to add to the team.

The Pittsburgh Pirates finished the 2026 season with a record of 82-80, continuing the long playoff drought of the franchise.

But the Pirates did see a lot of success this past season, with the team being much more competitive during the year. Even with the playoff miss, there is a lot to be excited about in Pittsburgh going forward.

So, as the team heads into a crucial offseason, the front office may want to look to spend some money to add to the roster. The Pirates have a nice core of young talent on the roster already, but if the team were to bring in more help, the postseason could be had in 2027.

While Pittsburgh has typically stayed away from spending heavily, there are moves that can be made around the league. The Pirates' front office owes it to the players to keep building this roster up, but it remains to be seen if it will happen.

However, if the Pirates do elect to spend, one name that could make some sense is slugger Teruaki Sato, who is coming to the big leagues from the NPB. The Japanese star could give this Pittsburgh team more power in the lineup, and he has had a lot of success overseas.

The Pirates were listed as an honorable mention for a landing spot for Sato by MLB analyst Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report. Pittsburgh could have some strong competition to land Sato, especially if the bigger-market teams were to get involved.

If the price tag for Sato were to go over the $120 million range, the Pirates would likely bow out of the sweepstakes. But if his free agency were to go similarly to how Munetaka Murakami's was a year ago, the Pirates could swoop in to land Sato.

Sato is coming off a Triple Crown season in NPB, with him hitting .306 with 39 home runs and 106 RBIs. This type of production could easily translate to the major leagues, and a team like the Pirates could use his services.

Adding this power to the lineup could give Pittsburgh an even more explosive offense, especially with the extra development of the young players on the team. Sato has mainly been a third baseman in his career, and the Pirates do have an opening at the position.

The fit is there for Pittsburgh to go after Sato, but it will come down to the money aspect for this team. But if the price is right, Sato could be an interesting option for the Pirates to consider.
