On this day in 2010, the Texas Rangers created a moment that will forever live on as one of the most iconic in franchise history.
Texas took down the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 in Game 5 of the American League Division Series to secure their first postseason series win in the history of the organization.
Cliff Lee stole the show in the game as he punched out 11 Tampa Bay hitters without allowing a walk en route to a complete game with just one run allowed.
Lee was acquired at the trade deadline during the 2010 season and had a dominant run during the postseason.
Give it up for former Rangers' star Lee
Ultimately, the left-hander would not end up re-signing with the Rangers in the offseason, but he was still responsible for some of the most iconic moments in team history during his short tenure, and Game 5 was no doubt at or near the top.
On the offensive side of the ball, it was base-running that would generate runs for Texas as they got the scoring started early when shortstop Elvis Andrus flew home from second base on a groundout to first off the bat of Josh Hamilton.
With the game tied at one in the fourth, Nelson Cruz took off attempting to steal third base and would come home to score after Rays catcher Kelly Shoppach fired the ball into left field.
Once again in the sixth, base running proved huge as Vladimir Guerrero scored from second while Tampa Bay was attempting to turn a double play.
Two additional runs in ninth inning
Leading 3-1 in the ninth, the Rangers scored their final two runs of the game in quite the opposite way as Ian Kinsler belted a two-run shot deep out to left to make it 5-1.
That would be more than enough run support for Lee, who would get BJ Upton to pop out into short left field, where Andrus caught the final out of the game and the series.
Eventually, Texas would use their big ALDS win to propel them to the World Series, where they would ultimately fall, but it was this series and this game that marked the first time postseason success in Rangers history.
There’s no doubt that this series win helped pave the way for the following year’s World Series run and eventually the Rangers' World Series title in 2023.
No matter how much success Texas has or will have in the postseason, there will always be reason to look back at the huge win in Game 5 of the 2010 ALDS.
