It was yet another solid day for Texas Rangers farmhands at the Arizona Fall League as the Surprise Saguaros snapped their losing streak with a big win.
The Surprise Saguaros are finally back in the win column.
After a three-game losing skid, the Saguaros took down the Desert Dogs 4-3 on Sunday to leap back over .500 on the season, and the Texas Rangers had several prospects right in the middle of it.
Rangers No. 17th-ranked prospect Jacob Johnson got the start for Surprise and was brilliant as he fired 2.1 no-hit innings, allowing just two walks and recording a strikeout.
So far, Johnson has thrown 4.2 innings in the Arizona Fall League and has allowed just one hit despite being the second-youngest pitcher in the whole league.
Rangers' Johnson looking good
Johnson has been experimenting with a new changeup grip in the AFL, and so far it’s yielded solid results.
During the minor-league season, Johnson spent most of his time in the Arizona Complex League but finished the year in Single-A. He says that his goal for next season is to start in High-A and give himself the chance to move up to Double-A Frisco.
There’s no doubt that if he continues to pitch how he has in the Fall League, the Roughriders could be seeing him at some point next season, and perhaps not too much longer after that, he’ll be knocking on the doors of the big leagues.
Following Johnson’s outing on Sunday in the Fall League, fellow Rangers prospect Jesus Gamez also took the mound.
Gamez faced just two batters but retired both of them, getting a groundout and then a foul pop out.
Chiquillo encounters bumpy waters
Texas prospect Alejandro Chiquillo would be next in line to pitch for Surprise, and he wouldn’t have as smooth a time as his fellow Rangers prospects.
Chiquillo would allow three earned runs on five hits in three innings of work. He did, however, record four strikeouts and only issued one walk.
On the offensive side of the ball, it was yet another solid day for outfielder Paxton Kling, who was amongst the Fall League’s best players during the first week of play.
Kling didn’t record a hit in his four at-bats, but he was able to work an impressive three walks and also had a stolen base.
It’s safe to say that Kling has been amongst the most impressive players in the Rangers system since being drafted by Texas out of Penn State.
Julian Brock was also in action as he got the start behind the dish but wound up going 0-for-4 at the plate.
