Texas Rangers top prospect Sebastian Walcott had a strong day in the Arizona Fall League, but the Surprise Saguaros dropped their third straight game.
It’s safe to say that the Surprise Saguaros are the most streaky team in the early goings of the Arizona Fall League.
Surprise opened up Fall League play with a three-game win streak, jumping out to a quick 3-0 start.
However, the Saguaros have yet to win a game since, dropping their last three to pull their record back to .500 at 3-3.
On Friday, the losing streak continued for Surprise as they fell to the Javelinas by a whopping final score of 10-4.
Rangers' prospects in action
Despite the tough result for the Saguaros, it was a noteworthy day for the Texas Rangers, who saw three of their nine AFL-rostered prospects in action.
Sebastian Walcott made yet another start for Surprise, playing shortstop and hitting second in the order.
It is, of course, significant that Walcott played in the field after he missed most of the minor league season due to injury and, when he did come back, was limited to DH in the majority of his games.
As for Friday, Walcott had a solid showing, going 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Once again, it didn’t take the Rangers' highest-rated prospect long to get in on the action as he swung at the very first pitch of his first at-bat, sending a groundball to second base for the inning's second out.
In the fourth, Walcott ripped a double into left field on the sixth pitch of his at-bat. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he would eventually come around to score the first run of the game for the Saguaros.
Walcott, Cook get cooking
Just one inning later, in the fifth, Walcott would come through with an infield single to bring home a run. In his final at-bat of the night, he would ground out to the pitcher in the eighth.
Rangers prospect Casey Cook once again got a start out in left field and also had a solid day at the plate.
Cook didn’t register in the hit column but was able to draw a pair of walks while hitting out of the seventh spot in the order. He also grounded out to first and to second.
On the mound, it was a tough day for Texas pitching prospect J'Briell Easley, who allowed four hits and three earned runs in just 1.2 innings of work.
Easley also issued a pair of free passes in what would ultimately go down as the frame that the game got away from Surprise.
