Texas Rangers top Prospect Sebastian Walcott made his Arizona Fall League debut on Sunday and went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, a walk, and a stolen base
It’s not often that fans look forward to the Arizona Fall League, but Texas Rangers fans had reason to be excited on the second day of the AFL season on Sunday.
Texas top prospect Sebastian Walcott made his season debut in the Fall League as the Saguaros took down the Rafters 6-4 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Walcott had a busy and very productive night, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored.
Rangers watch Walcott deliver
The plan is for Walcott to play just two or three times per week in the Fall League, but seeing him be so involved in the action during his first game has to be an encouraging sign for the Rangers after he missed much of the minor league season with injury.
Rangers pitching prospect Jacob Johnson got the start for Surprise and earned the win after throwing a pair of shutout innings, allowing just one hit while punching out two.
Fellow pitching prospect Alejandro Chiquillo had perhaps the most impressive performance on the mound as he fired three perfect innings with four punchouts.
Catcher Julian Brock got the start behind the plate for the Saguaros and picked up a hit in four at-bats.
Rangers prospect Casey Cook got the start in left field and drew a walk as well as scored a run in a pair of at-bats.
Rangers have nine prospects on team
Overall, Texas has nine prospects on the Surprise roster. Three of their pitchers did not feature in the game, as well as outfielder Paxton Kling.
Certainly, for reasons like Walcott’s, clubs do not always permit their players to play every day in the Fall League given they just came off full minor league seasons.
However, it is a good opportunity for guys to get extra reps and go up against some solid talent. In the Rangers' case with Walcott, the Fall League represents an opportunity for him to get some extra reps after he missed much of the season.
Kling will also be worth watching for Rangers fans when he is in the lineup. He has been a prospect that has risen up the Texas ranks ever since being drafted.
Additonally as was displayed on Sunday, Texas has some interesting pitching prospects to look out for.
The Fall League will run through the middle of November, wrapping up with the championship game in which Rangers fans will no doubt hope the Saguaros are a participant.
