Sitting at .500 and eyeing a wide-open American League, the Texas Rangers could ignite their lineup by landing a three-time batting champion.
The Texas Rangers are in the midst of another .500 season, but in such a weak American League, there's a ton of room to do some damage.
No one is saying the Rangers must be the most aggressive team at the trade deadline, but it sure wouldn't hurt to make a move or two.
ESPN's Jeff Passan believes this roster needs both a leverage bullpen arm and a steady bat. If the Rangers had to choose between those two, Passan opts to go with an addition on offense.
Overall, he thinks the best fit to become a Ranger in the next week is San Francisco Giants second baseman Luis Arraez.
Why Arraez is destined to be a Ranger
The Rangers' first trade featured a right-handed pitcher and a catcher, so neither of those options is a big splash like Arraez. That's not to discredit that trade; it was a great one for Texas, but Arraez would far and away be the biggest move they make here in 2026.
There are no signs that the Rangers would sign him to a long-term extension, but in the midst of a tight playoff race not just in the AL, but specifically in the AL West, the Rangers know they can't get complacent.
Passan notes that 20-year-old shortstop Sebastian Walcott is off the market, but otherwise, "they've got enough talent in their system to land Arraez or potentially an outfield bat."
It's interesting to see him mention a different outfield bat, but obviously, that's at the top of their list. This team is in a great spot with 24-year-old Wyatt Langford, and obviously, everyone is ready to have veteran Corey Seager back in the fold.
Rangers don't have much financial wiggle room
A direct quote from Passan is the fact that this team doesn't "have much financial wiggle room," so that's why a rental like Arraez makes perfect sense.
The Giants waited until late January to sign him to a one-year, $12 million deal. Again, Arraez doesn't have to be around for the long haul, but there's no doubt he could make an immediate impact on this lineup as he makes a push to become a four-time batting champion.
With one trade already completed, it'll be interesting to see if the Rangers put together another couple of small ones or if they swing for the fences with Arraez. The Giants are nowhere near where they need to be, so Arraez is absolutely on the market, and at this point, it'll come down to a bidding war, one Passan believes the Rangers should be able to win.
