Texas Rangers reliever Jose Corniell didn't have a good outing on Tuesday night as Miami Marlins win yet again.
It was somewhat imperative that the Texas Rangers started to get back on the winning track against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night at loanPark Depot in Miami. Rangers starter Cal Quantrill went the first two innings, then was replaced by reliever Jose Corniell.
Corniell, though, didn't have his best stuff going as the Marlins pulled off a 6-4 victory.
Quantrill worked two innings, giving up three hits, one earned run, didn't walk a batter, struck out one, and gave up a home run. Corniell picked up the loss. In 3.1 innings, Corniell surrendered seven hits, five earned runs, walked two, struck out three, and gave up two home runs.
Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara got the win, going to 8-4 this season. In 6.2 innings of work, Alcantara gave up five hits, one earned run, walked three, and struck out four. Alcantara now has a 4.01 this season.
Lopez Gets Rangers on the Board
With the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the second inning, Nicky Lopez picked up an RBI groundout. Alejandro Osuna scored, putting the Rangers up 1-0. Texas had chances to add to their lead, but couldn't get the job done.
The Marlins, though, answered in the bottom half of the second as Heriberto Hernandez hit his eighth homer this season. That tied the game at 1-1. Miami went ahead 2-1 on Joe Mack's solo home run -- his fourth homer this season.
Then Miami put up a four-spot in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. Owen Caissie's three-run home run, his ninth homer this season, was the big blow in the Marlins' scoring output.
Texas scored a single run in the eighth inning, then two runs in the ninth. Brandon Nimmo turned on a pitch and sent it over the right-center field wall, his eighth home run this season. Ezequiel Duran reached second base on a throwing error by Miami reliever Tyler Zuber with one out.
Lake Bachar came on to replace Zuber. He forced Osuna to fly out to center field, and Jarred Kelenic struck out to end the inning and a potential Rangers threat.
Rangers Nick Fairbanks for Two Runs
In the ninth, Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks came on to close it out. Fairbanks got the first two outs, but Joc Pederson hit a solo home run -- his 10th homer this season -- moved Texas closer at 6-3. Wyatt Langford reached base when he was hit by a Fairbanks pitch.
After an injury delay, Nimmo tripled to center field and Langford scored as the Rangers made it a little bit closer at 6-4. Josh Jung struck out, though, and Fairbanks secured the victory. He did not get a save, though.
Texas was 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, leaving nine total runners on base. Miami was 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and also left nine total runners on base.
The loss sends Texas three games under .500 at 38-41, still in third place in the American League West Division. Miami goes to 41-39 overall and the Marlins are in third place in the National League East Division.
The Rangers and Marlins close out their three-game series in Miami on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 11:10 a.m. CT, so Rangers fans can have brunch while watching their baseball team try and pick up a win.
