Team's payroll situation probably will keep Texas looking to just make minor deals.

While the Texas Rangers made a deal to pick up New York Mets star Brandon Nimmo, that might be about it for the team even with the Winter Meetings starting up soon.

The Rangers, of course, are going to have a new manager in Skip Schumaker and a new mindset when getting ready for the 2026 MLB season.

Of course, Texas wants to prepare itself for a new run at winning the American League West Division, too. Yet there might some upgrades needed for Texas to make that a reality. Will the ballclub look to make some trades?

Don't bet on it. At least that's what is being put forth in a new article from The Athletic by Ken Rosenthal and Patrick Mooney.

"As things stand, the Texas Rangers’ acquisition of left fielder Brandon Nimmo for second baseman Marcus Semien might be the biggest move they make this offseason," Rosenthal and Mooney reported.

"The Rangers need to reconstruct their bullpen and find a catcher to replace Jonah Heim, whom they non-tendered," according to the article. "But according to team sources, Texas lacks the payroll flexibility to sign top free-agent catcher J.T. Realmuto, a native of Oklahoma.

"Danny Jansen and Victor Caratini are more likely free-agent pursuits, and a trade would be another possibility," the article continued. "The Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals are among the teams deep in young catching."

That's not news Rangers fans want to hear at all. They want to see Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young get busy with other MLB clubs and agents while in Orlando, Fla., for the Winter Meetings.

The Rangers are coming off two so-so seasons under Bruce Bochy's leadership. Bochy is gone, now working for the San Francisco Giants in a different position.

So, this team is firmly in Schumaker and Young's hands. They need to find a way to make it all come together before the 2026 MLB season officially begins.

Without the ability on the books to sign a guy like Realmuto, who would immediately help cure Texas' catching issues, that lends credence to any type of chatter about signing a new catcher.

There might be a deal that Texas can make with another MLB team or even look at players on the free agent market at this time.

Not being able to spend big bucks for a splashy free agent might get under the skin of both Rangers fans and followers. They will have to take a wait-and-see attitude when it comes to deals and the Rangers' involvement in any trade at the Winte Meetings.

Let's see what Texas might do.
