Ezequiel Durán has transformed from a struggling prospect into a resilient cornerstone for the Texas Rangers lineup.
Ezequiel Durán established a new career high in home runs on Sunday afternoon while helping the Texas Rangers secure a 7-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.
Durán connected for his 15th home run of the season in the third inning, surpassing the 14 he hit in 2023.
The two-out solo home run came against Dustin May and tied the game at 2. Statcast projected the blast at 410 feet.
Durán’s career year so far
Durán is hitting .273/.331/.450 with 26 doubles, four triples, 15 home runs, 73 RBIs and a .780 OPS in 128 games. He’s drawn 37 walks against 119 strikeouts.
His previous best power season came in 2023, when he played 122 games and batted .276 with 22 doubles, 14 home runs and 46 RBIs.
Durán struggled significantly in 2025. He appeared in 90 games without hitting a home run, finishing with a .224 batting average, .559 OPS, and 14 RBIs.
His improvement was again evident Sunday.
Durán added a two-run ground-rule double in the fifth inning and finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Durán’s value has extended well beyond his offense.
Durán has appeared in 49 games at shortstop, 43 at third base, 26 at second, 21 in left field, 13 in right, six in center, and two at first base.
According to Baseball Reference, he has accumulated 4.1 wins above replacement in 2026 after totaling 1.7 across his first four seasons combined.
Durán has recorded at least a hit in six of his last seven games. He also has 10 stolen bases in 13 attempts this season after totaling 24 in 33 attempts during his first four years.
Durán originally joined Texas on July 29, 2021, when the New York Yankees traded him as part of the Joey Gallo deal. Glenn Otto, Josh Smith and Trevor Hauver also went to the Rangers.
He made his MLB debut on June 4, 2022, against the Seattle Mariners and went 0-for-3 before later earning a place on Texas’ 2023 World Series roster.
Durán’s versatility
His ability to move throughout the infield and outfield gives Texas considerable flexibility when constructing a lineup or responding to injuries.
That adaptability requires more than athleticism. Durán must prepare for different responsibilities, positioning and situations while maintaining his offensive approach.
His development after a difficult 2025 season also demonstrates resilience. Rather than allowing that year to define him, he has reestablished himself as an important contributor.
Durán is under contract through 2026 at $1.38 million, becomes arbitration-eligible in 2027 and is not expected to reach free agency until 2029.
The Rangers are 67-70 with 25 games remaining and return to Arlington tonight to begin a three-game series against the Athletics.
