For Texas Rangers center fielder Evan Carter, health is priority No. 1 this season.

Texas Rangers fans have been somewhat frustrated seeing center fielder Evan Carter not be able to stay healthy for a good stretch. Carter feels that frustration, too, not only from them but for himself, too.

Carter is one of the most talented players on the Rangers' roster. Yet his times on the Injured List have put Rangers fans on watch when it comes to seeing Carter take the field.

That's one reason why Carter is so focused on making sure he's in the best shape possible. Carter is focused on this, and his usual hitting and fielding work, at Spring Training for the Rangers.

“Health wise, I feel really, really good,” Carter told Rangers beat reporter Kennedi Landry of MLB.com before heading to Arizona. “I’m excited about it. I’m trying not to jinx anything or get too giddy, but feel really good. I feel like I've kind of been telling myself that I felt good in the past.

"I feel really good right now," Carter said. "I feel like we had a good routine that we were kind of trying to get on top of before things out of my control happened last season. So yeah I feel really good.”

As everyone pretty much knows, health equals wealth. What does it mean, though, for Carter? It could be a match between physical health and being able to hit left-handed pitching successfully.

In looking at his career slash lines against right-handers and left-handers, then the contrast could not be even more stark.

Landry, in her story, indicated that against right-handed pitching, Carter has a career slash line of .262/.350/.479/.829. Carter has just played some in three MLB seasons. He's only gotten 68 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers. Carter has a slash line of .083/.191/.083/.275 against them.

Carter also knows that he must improve against lefties in order to have a full impact on the Rangers' lineup.

“Obviously with the lefty stuff, if you bang righties, you get your opportunities against lefties,” Carter said. “Once you get your opportunities better, you capitalize on them. I don't really know what else to do at the end of the day."

Carter looked pretty good when facing lefthanders in a Sunday Spring Training game against the Colorado Rockies. Rangers manager Skip Schumaker noticed what Carter was doing, too.

“When he's taking his walks, when he's controlling the strike zone, he’s really good,” Schumaker said. “He's not bailing. If you bail a little bit, you're in trouble. And he's like in the fight against the lefties right now, and that's why his quality of at-bat is really good. … You can't really have asked for a better day against two lefties today.”

Rangers fans are going to be watching Carter closely this season, hoping that he shows continued improvement at the plate and with his health, too.
