Texas Rangers lefty Jordan Montgomery continued his recovery from Tommy John surgery with another effective rehab start.
The Texas Rangers could soon receive a significant boost to their pitching staff as veteran left-hander Jordan Montgomery continues progressing through the final stages of his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery.
Montgomery made his eighth rehab appearance on Aug. 2 for Triple-A Round Rock, turning in another encouraging performance as he works toward his first major league appearance since the 2024 season.
The 33-year-old delivered five scoreless innings, allowing five hits while striking out five batters. He continued to build stamina while showcasing a full arsenal of pitches, an important step as Texas evaluates his readiness for a return to the major-league rotation.
Building toward the finish line
Montgomery's latest outing reflected continued progress rather than simply increasing his workload.
His velocity is continuing to improve as he regains strength following surgery. He also mixed in a healthy combination of breaking balls and off-speed pitches, including curveballs, sliders, and changeups, demonstrating confidence in using his entire repertoire.
Although Montgomery has completed eight rehab starts, the Rangers are prioritizing the overall quality of his outings instead of focusing strictly on pitch counts. The organization wants to ensure his command, velocity and overall execution are where they need to be before activating him from the injured list.
Rotation help could arrive soon
While no official timetable has been announced, Montgomery appears to be nearing the end of his rehab assignment. A return during the Rangers' next trip through the rotation remains a possibility if the club believes he is fully prepared for major league competition.
His return would provide valuable depth for a Texas rotation looking to stay in the postseason race during the final two months of the season.
The timing could also prove especially important because ace Jacob deGrom has recently managed a lingering hip and glute issue that has affected his workload. If the Rangers decide deGrom would benefit from additional rest between starts, Montgomery could step into the rotation and help ease that burden.
Veteran presence could strengthen Texas
Adding Montgomery would give Texas another experienced starter capable of handling meaningful innings down the stretch. His postseason experience and familiarity with high-pressure situations could provide stability for a pitching staff navigating the final stretch of the regular season.
With the trade deadline now in the rearview mirror, the Rangers may not need an external acquisition to reinforce their rotation. Instead, one of their biggest additions could come from within as Montgomery moves closer to completing his lengthy recovery and returning to a major-league mound.
