Joc Pederson has been placed on the Injured List with a left-hand fracture and will miss the remainder of the Texas Rangers’ regular season.
The Texas Rangers will be without Joc Pederson for the remainder of the regular season after the veteran designated hitter was placed on the Injured List with a left-hand fracture.
Pederson has been sidelined since Sept. 13 after suffering an injury against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Rangers had initially hoped he could recover enough to return before the end of the regular season, but his progress at the plate ultimately was not enough to make him an effective option.
The injury occurred one night earlier, on Sept. 12, when Arizona starter Brandon Pfaadt hit Pederson with a 93.3 mph four-seam fastball in the fifth inning. Pederson remained in the game long enough to run the bases before being replaced by a pinch-hitter later in the contest.
Pederson's injury revealed after X-rays
Initial X-rays did not reveal a fracture, but further evaluation with a hand specialist eventually confirmed the injury.
Pederson has not appeared in a game since that matchup. While the Rangers continued to monitor his recovery, he recently began working toward swinging a bat again. He progressed to hitting off a tee Tuesday, but the sessions did not show enough improvement for him to return to game action.
The decision to place Pederson on the injured list is retroactive to Sept. 19, leaving open the possibility of a postseason return if Texas advances to the American League Wild Card Series.
That possibility gives the Rangers at least some reason to remain hopeful about having Pederson available in October, but his absence will still create a significant hole in the lineup during the final stretch of the regular season.
Pederson has primarily served as one half of Texas' designated hitter platoon alongside right-handed hitter Justin Foscue. Against right-handed pitching this season, Pederson has posted a .245/.338/.496 slash line with 25 home runs.
His power has been an important part of the Rangers' offensive production, particularly against right-handed starters.
The injury is also an unfortunate repeat of what Pederson experienced during his first season with Texas. He missed time in 2025 after suffering a fracture in his right hand when he was hit by a pitch.
Quantrill moved to 60-day Injured List
Texas also made a second significant roster move involving its pitching staff, transferring right-hander Cal Quantrill from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL.
Quantrill suffered a right lat strain during his Sept. 20 start and will not be eligible to return during the postseason.
The move is especially notable given the role Quantrill played in the Rangers' rotation this season. He made 14 starts after joining the rotation following Jack Leiter's injury in June, posting a 2.51 ERA during that stretch.
Quantrill was particularly effective late in the season, recording a 1.82 ERA over his final nine starts beginning July 28. He also entered the final portion of the season having recorded six consecutive quality starts.
While Quantrill's season is now officially over, Pederson's postseason availability remains a possibility.
For Texas, the immediate challenge will be replacing Pederson's production over the final games of the regular season while hoping his hand heals enough to give the Rangers another offensive option should they reach October.
