The Texas Rangers will have a major reinforcement for their huge three-game series against the Houston Astros.

Prior to Friday night’s series opener, Texas officially activated star shortstop Corey Seager from the 10-day Injured List.

Seager will be back at shortstop, batting third as the Rangers face Astros ace Hunter Brown at Daikin Park.

For the last 23 games, Seager has been sidelined with lower back inflammation. On Tuesday and Wednesday, he made rehab appearances for the Double-A Frisco Roughriders, where he went 1-for-5 with a home run and walk while converting all six of his defensive chances at shortstop.

It’s been a struggle for Seager at the plate this season as he has hit just .182 with 10 home runs, 6 doubles, 25 RBI, and 28 walks in 51 games, but there’s no doubt that if Texas wants to be at its best, they need him in the lineup and producing.

To make room for Seager, the Rangers optioned Josh Smith back down to Triple-A Round Rock once again.

With the injury to Josh Jung, there were some starts available for Smith during his most recent stint with the big league club, but once again, he wasn’t really able to get going at the plate.

The Rangers also made some moves on the pitching side of things ahead of the series opener against Houston.

Newly acquired right-handed pitcher Chase Silseth has officially reported to the club and been added to the team’s active roster.

On Wednesday night, Texas acquired Silseth and catcher Logan O’Hoppe from the Los Angeles Angels. O’Hoppe will report to Triple-A Round Rock

To create space for Silseth on both the active and 40-man roster, the Rangers have designated Marco Gonzalez for assignment.

Gonzalez made just two appearances for Texas, posting a 1.50 ERA in six innings after being called up on July 21.

In another pitching swap, the Rangers have called up Luis Curvelo to make his fourth stint with the team. In eight big league appearances this season, the right-hander has posted a 7.56 ERA.

Additionally, Winston Santos has been sent back down to Triple-A Round Rock after he was called up on Thursday but did not pitch. He has just one big league appearance this season.

With today’s transactions, the Rangers have 39 players on the club’s Major League roster, along with eight players on the 60-day Injured List (RHP’s Carter Baumler and Jose Corniell, LHP’s Jalen Beeks, Cody Bradford, Robert Garcia, and Jordan Montgomery, INF/OF Michael Helman, and C Danny Jansen).
