The Texas Rangers remain locked in a battle with the Seattle Mariners for first place in the American League West Division. They hold a 1.5-game lead with one week remaining before the MLB trade deadline.

Texas has an opportunity to create additional separation with a strong finish to July and a productive start to August.

However, if the Rangers hope to distance themselves from Seattle and strengthen their postseason chances, they may need outside help before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

The biggest area of concern continues to be the bullpen, particularly the late innings.

That is why Dennis Lin from The Athletic believes Texas could make a significant move by acquiring New York Mets reliever Luke Weaver before the deadline.

Lin predicted that Weaver would become a Ranger. He noted that Weaver may not have the same profile as Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman, whom Texas acquired during its 2023 World Series run, but he thinks he would still represent a major upgrade 

“Luke Weaver becomes a Ranger,” Lin wrote. “He’s not Aroldis Chapman, whom the Rangers acquired on their way to the 2023 World Series, but Weaver would represent a significant upgrade for a bullpen in need.”

Adding Weaver would give the Rangers another dependable high-leverage arm capable of handling some of the most important innings of a game.

Texas has received an outstanding season from Jacob Latz, who owns a 1.69 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and 20 saves in 48 innings over 38 appearances (one start).

While a few other relievers have also performed well, the Rangers could still benefit from adding another established late-inning option capable of closing games when necessary.

Weaver fits that description perfectly.

The 32-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding season with the Mets, posting a 1.93 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with one save in 42 innings over 40 appearances.

He’s recorded 43 strikeouts against 11 walks, continuing to establish himself as one of the National League's most effective relievers.

Another aspect that makes Weaver especially attractive is his contract situation.

Rather than being a short-term rental, Weaver remains under team control through the 2027 season as part of his two-year, $22 million contract.

That gives the Rangers the opportunity to strengthen not only this year's bullpen but also one that could continue playing an important role beyond the current season.

If Texas completes a deal for Weaver, it would address one of the team's most pressing needs while adding another experienced reliever capable of pitching in high-pressure situations during a postseason race.

According to Lin's projection, that is exactly the move the Rangers could make before the Aug. 3 trade deadline as they attempt to solidify their position atop the American League West.

Weaver has developed into one of MLB's most reliable late-inning relievers through his ability to remain composed under pressure and consistently execute his game plan.

His confidence and aggressive approach allow him to attack hitters without becoming predictable, making him a valuable option in the most important moments of a game.

Beyond his performance on the mound, Weaver brings postseason experience and a veteran presence that can positively influence an entire bullpen.

He prepares meticulously between outings and has earned a reputation for adjusting quickly, qualities that help him maintain consistency throughout a long season.

Pitchers capable of handling high-leverage situations are among the most valuable assets for contenders.

Weaver has repeatedly demonstrated that he embraces those opportunities. His experience, professionalism, and competitive mindset would make him a natural fit for the Rangers.
