The Texas Rangers can bolster their bullpen and avoid gutting the farm system by targeting breakout reliever Luke Weaver.
Mason Miller has become one of the most coveted relievers ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline.
Virtually every contender would welcome the opportunity to add the All-Star closer, but only one team will ultimately be able to acquire him if the San Diego Padres decide to make him available.
The Texas Rangers have emerged as one of the intriguing potential landing spots, although completing such a deal would almost certainly require a significant prospect package.
Kerry Miller from Bleacher Report recently suggested that Miller would be an ideal solution for the Rangers’ bullpen. However, he noted that acquiring him would likely require Texas to part with top prospect Sebastian Walcott and additional assets, making such a blockbuster unlikely.
“In a dream world, sure, they’d go out and get Mason Miller to solve that problem, even though they already have an All-Star closer in Jacob Latz,” Miller wrote.
“But they would have to be willing to give up top prospect Sebastian Walcott, and then some in order to grease those wheels, and that’s highly unlikely to happen.”
A more attainable reliever for the Rangers
With that in mind, the Rangers may need to shift their attention toward a more realistic option.
One name that could fit is New York Mets reliever Luke Weaver.
According to Miller, the Rangers should monitor the Mets’ situation closely as the trade deadline approaches.
If New York becomes more active in trade discussions, several players could become available, although Juan Soto, A.J. Ewing, Nolan McLean, and Carson Benge would likely remain off limits.
Weaver stands out as a logical alternative.
Miller pointed to the veteran reliever as a more attainable target, highlighting both his strong rebound season after a modest 2025 campaign and the fact that he remains under contract through next season at $11 million.
That combination gives the Rangers an opportunity to improve the bullpen without sacrificing the type of elite prospect package that would likely be necessary to land Miller.
Weaver’s consistency
Weaver has rewarded the Mets with outstanding production this season.
He owns a 1.98 ERA and 0.80 WHIP with one save and 43 strikeouts in 41 innings over 39 appearances. He’s re-established himself as one of the more dependable late-inning relievers in the National League.

That type of consistency is exactly what contenders search for when looking to strengthen the back end of a bullpen before October.
For Texas, adding another experienced high-leverage reliever could further solidify a pitching staff that already possesses several quality late-inning options.
Rather than paying the enormous acquisition cost that would likely accompany a pursuit of Miller, targeting Weaver could provide a more cost-effective solution. And he would still significantly improve the bullpen.
If the Rangers hope to make another deep postseason run, identifying value in the trade market may prove just as important as pursuing the biggest names available.
