The Texas Rangers continued reshaping their roster Tuesday, designating outfielder Jarred Kelenic and right-handed pitcher Joe Ross for assignment.

The moves create space on both the active and 40-man rosters for newly acquired right-hander Chris Paddack and utility player Cameron Cauley, whose promotion to the major league club was finalized after being reported earlier in the day.

With the transactions completed, Texas now has one open spot on its 40-man roster.

Kelenic's stay in Arlington lasted just over a week after joining the major league roster 10 days ago.

The 26-year-old appeared in seven games but received only 10 plate appearances. He collected one hit, drew two walks and struck out five times before the Rangers elected to move in a different direction.

While the limited playing time made it difficult to fully evaluate his performance, the club's roster composition likely played a significant role in the decision.

Following Wyatt Langford's placement on the injured list, Evan Carter returned to handle center field duties. However, Carter, Alejandro Osuna and Brandon Nimmo all bat left-handed, leaving Texas without a natural right-handed complement in the outfield.

Cauley, a right-handed hitter capable of playing both the infield and outfield, provides greater flexibility in that role. Because Kelenic was out of minor league options, the Rangers could not simply send him to Triple-A without first removing him from the 40-man roster.

Once considered one of baseball's elite prospects, Kelenic has struggled to establish consistent success in the majors despite receiving opportunities with multiple organizations.

Across parts of several big league seasons, he owns a .211 batting average with a .283 on-base percentage and a .372 slugging percentage.

His journey has included previous stops with the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox, and Rangers. Although his major league production has been inconsistent, he has continued to perform well in Triple-A this season, posting a .254/.377/.522 slash line.

If he clears waivers, Kelenic has the ability to reject an outright assignment and elect free agency.

Ross also finds himself designated for assignment after a brief stint with Texas.

The veteran right-hander signed a minor league contract with the Rangers in May following his release from the Arizona Diamondbacks and was promoted to the majors earlier this month.

He made five relief appearances, allowing four earned runs over eight innings while recording a 4.50 ERA.

Ross has served primarily as a swingman in recent seasons after returning from Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for much of 2022 and 2023. Given his major league service time, he can also decline an outright assignment if he clears waivers, making free agency a possible next step in his career.
