MacKenzie Gore, Josh Jung pick up notifications in newest power rankings data from The Athletic.
While the Texas Rangers have a day off before starting a three-game series in the Bronx against Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees, maybe they'll take some time to look at the newest MLB Power Rankings.
According to The Athletic, which has MLB reporters put together weekly power rankings, the Rangers find themselves in the No. 8 position.
In writing about Texas, Levi Weaver of The Athletic pointed toward a couple of players and their statistics in MacKenzie Gore and Josh Jung.
Despite being 16-18 for the 2026 MLB season right now, the Rangers are in second place in the American League West Division. It's been a tough start to the season for a bunch of teams in the division, so the Rangers and Athletics have found ways to take advantage of it all.
Weaver turned his attention first on Gore and his season so far.
"First: When the Rangers traded for Gore, it was an example of doubling down on an existing strength," Weaver wrote. "One number that really drives home the point?
"Gore entered Monday night as the AL leader in K/9, at 12.2, but — depending on how things go Tuesday, he may lose that lead to his own teammate Jacob deGrom, who currently sits at 12.4, but hasn’t yet pitched enough games to qualify for the leaderboard," Weaver continued.
Then, Weaver started reviewing what type of start Jung has had in the 2026 MLB season.
"But the bigger development might be that Jung seems to finally be having that big breakout season," Weaver wrote. "The eighth pick of the 2019 draft, Jung finished fourth in AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2023, but has battled injury after injury, struggling to find consistency. He’s been on fire this month."
The Rangers entered this season with a focus and intention on playing better baseball. Skip Schumaker came out of the upper boxes to get back into the dugout as Rangers manager. Texas wanted to get off to a good start under Schumaker's leadership.
Being two games under .500 at this point and having a couple of injuries crop up for key players might seem like the organization is headed to another so-so season.
But there are more than 120-plus games this season. There's still plenty of time for the Rangers to right the ship and head north of .500. Hopefully, Jung can keep showing up for Texas all season long.
Remembering John Sterling
As for the Yankees and, well, for much of the MLB world, news broke on Monday that longtime Yankees broadcaster John Sterling had died. Sterling was 87.
In his career, which not only saw Sterling call many Yankees games but also work for the Atlanta Braves along with the NBA's Atlanta Hawks, his broadcasting style was his own.
Sterling was known for his elaborate Yankees victory calls -- "Thaaaaah Yankees win!" -- along with nicknames for Yankees players.
Before the Yankees' home game on Monday night, Sterling's memory was honored with a moment of silence at Yankee Stadium.
Sterling truly was one of a kind.
