The Texas Rangers eye a high-stakes gamble on Spencer Jones as the New York Yankees weigh trading their towering rookie prospect.
With the trade deadline right around the corner, the Texas Rangers will decide just how serious they are about making a push to win the American League West.
The AL's weakest division has no shortage of competition; entering the second half, it's truly anyone's division to win.
The Rangers continue to swap places with the Seattle Mariners, but the Houston Astros are making a strong case as well.
According to The Athletic, the New York Yankees may have a solution for the Rangers. Struggling rookie outfielder Spencer Jones hasn't lived up to the hype, and it seems like the Yankees may be ready to already throw in the towel.
Yankees lack patience for 25-year-old prospect
There's no doubt Jones' age is working against him, but he's only had 73 at-bats in the big leagues. Sure, his .233 batting average isn't ideal, but there's absolutely a lot to love about what the 6-foot-7 rookie brings to the table.
Tim Britton, Johnny Flores Jr., Chad Jennings, and Eno Sarris compiled a list of 78 players who could be on the move at the deadline, and Jones' inclusion turned some heads.
"Jones, who didn't make the Yankees' Opening Day roster out of spring training, eventually made his debut as a matter of necessity," they wrote. "The strikeout problem that served as a major red flag as a prospect manifested itself at the big-league level. At the same time, so did his knack for power. Whether that has room in New York remains to be seen."
Historically, Jones has had a strikeout percentage that doesn't even seem real. In 1678 at-bats in the minors, he struck out 621 times. When looking at 2024 and 2025 in particular, he struck out a combined 379 times in those seasons.
The state of the Rangers outfield
The main three who are holding things down for the Rangers outfield are Wyatt Langford, Brandon Nimmo, and Evan Carter. Langford and Carter are both extremely young (24 and 23), but Nimmo adds a veteran presence that's helped mold the two into the players they are today.
Bench options include 23-year-olds Cam Cauley and Alejandro Osuna. Again, age is not an issue. The Rangers aren't in desperate need to get younger, so there doesn't seem to be an immediate need for Jones, someone with a lower batting average than everyone other than Carter.
Seeing as Carter, Nimmo, and Osuna are all left-handed batters, that's another case for Jones that is rendered obsolete.
