The Texas Rangers will be without one of their most reliable relievers after placing right-hander Jakob Junis on the 15-day Injured List because of a left adductor strain. The move was made retroactive to July 29.
To fill the vacant roster spot, the Rangers recalled right-hander Winston Santos, adding another arm to the bullpen as the club prepares for the stretch run.
At this point, the organization has not provided a timetable for Junis' recovery, leaving his availability for the coming weeks uncertain.
A dependable late-inning option
Junis has quietly become one of the Rangers' most valuable bullpen pieces this season. While he isn't known for overpowering hitters, he has consistently delivered quality innings in high-leverage situations.
Across 40 innings, the veteran has posted a 2.70 ERA while limiting free passes with an outstanding 4.3 percent walk rate, one of the best marks among American League relievers. Although his strikeout numbers fall below league average, he has offset that by generating weak contact and avoiding hard-hit balls.
His steady performance has earned him 14 holds, the highest total on the Rangers' pitching staff, making him an important bridge to the back end of the bullpen.
Bullpen depth remains a concern
The injury comes at an inconvenient time for Texas, whose relief corps has struggled to establish consistency throughout the season.
As a unit, Rangers relievers have produced a 4.23 ERA, ranking in the lower half of Major League Baseball. The bullpen has also generated one of the league's lowest strikeout rates, increasing the importance of dependable veterans capable of protecting late leads.
Without Junis available, the Rangers will need other relievers to take on larger responsibilities while they wait for his return.
Trade deadline focus unchanged
Even before Junis' injury, Texas had been expected to pursue bullpen reinforcements ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
The club recently added right-hander Chase Silseth in a deal with the Los Angeles Angels that also brought catcher Logan O'Hoppe to Texas. However, Junis' absence creates another opening in the relief corps, making additional pitching help an even greater priority.
Financial limitations could complicate the Rangers' search, meaning the front office may continue targeting controllable or cost-effective pitchers rather than established veterans with significant salaries.
For now, Santos will receive an opportunity to contribute while Texas works to replace one of its steadiest bullpen arms and evaluates its options before the trade deadline.
