The Texas Rangers bring back Jarred Kelenic and Joe Ross on minor-league contracts after both players elected free agency.
The Texas Rangers are keeping two familiar faces in the organization after re-signing outfielder Jarred Kelenic and right-handed pitcher Joe Ross to minor-league contracts.
Both players briefly became free agents after clearing waivers and electing free agency when they were outrighted off the 40-man roster. Rather than pursue opportunities elsewhere, each agreed to return to Texas and remain available as organizational depth.
Their decisions provide the Rangers with experienced options at both the major- and minor-league levels as the club navigates through injuries and roster moves during the second half of the season.
Kelenic Stays in the Organization
Kelenic joined the Rangers on a minor-league deal in early June before earning a promotion to the major-league roster later that month.
His latest stint in the majors was brief, appearing in seven games and collecting one hit while drawing two walks in eight at-bats. Before arriving in Texas, Kelenic spent time with the Chicago White Sox, appearing in 19 games earlier this season.
The former first-round pick has struggled to find sustained offensive production throughout his major-league career, posting a batting average just above .200 across more than 1,500 career plate appearances. Even so, the Rangers continue to view him as a capable depth option should another opportunity arise.
Texas' current outfield alignment has shifted following Wyatt Langford's recent trip to the Injured List. Alejandro Osuna, Evan Carter and Brandon Nimmo have handled the starting roles, while rookie Cam Cauley gives the club a right-handed bat off the bench.
Ross Provides Experienced Pitching Depth
Ross also returns after making a handful of appearances for Texas earlier this season.
The veteran right-hander pitched in five games for the Rangers, allowing five earned runs over eight innings. Prior to joining Texas, Ross opened the year with the Arizona Diamondbacks, making three relief appearances before changing organizations.
Although injuries have altered the trajectory of his career, Ross has continued to provide value as a veteran depth arm. He has pitched effectively at Triple-A this season, recording a 3.78 ERA across 33⅓ innings.
With both Ross and Kelenic back on minor-league contracts, the Rangers preserve valuable depth at two key positions while maintaining experienced players who can be called upon later this season if roster needs arise.
